Installing WRX suspension in Legacy?

Recommended Posts

Howdy all, I just bought my first Subaru, a 96 Legacy AWD 5sp 2.2 wagon.

The suspension is pretty mushy, so I'm looking to get something stiffer, but not necessarily lower the car. Also, I'm broke.

There seem to be a lot of stock suspension set-ups floating around from the sportier cars after people put aftermarket stuff on, and they seem to sell for a lot cheaper than, for instance, KYB dampers and new springs.

So, I'm wondering if I can put some stock WRX or STI struts/springs in my car. I've heard of this being done, but I'm wondering what model years I need to look for, and what parts (heard the top cap in the rear needs to be changed).

I found a listing of spring rates that seems to indicate that the front WRX rate is around 165, vs the legacy front rate of about 123. Not sure if the rear is similarly more stiff. I think the legacy rear springs are around 195 lbs, but I could be wrong. Anyone know the spring rates for the rear of a WRX wagon?

Also, wondering if STI suspension would be similarly swappable. Any ideas?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I've owned a lot of souped up VW's in the past, so the soobie thing is pretty new to me.
