I have an 87 gl-10 wagon with a part-time 4wd that I just cracked the heads on it again. The moter i'm putting back in it is out of my 88 rx. I figured as long as i'm swapping the moter iI might as well swap in the dual range full time tranny. My questions are the trannys diffrent lenths ie am I going to have to do something different with my drive shafts and the diff lock mechanizn appers to be the same as what engaged the 4wd on my part time tranny i have so does that mean that the wiring for my push botton 4wheel drive is the same whiring i need for my diff lock. and any other info on the swap whould be helpful.

didnt the 87 GL-10 come with a dual range 5 speed? but i guess you want full time 4wd, with the option of lower range, right?

i got the tranny so i thought i might as well use it i also have a partime dual range but i would rather use the full time dual range. as far the gl-10 coming with the dual range i couldn't say all i know ismine has a single range part-time

i've done this to my 86. i remember that some of the shift linkage hardware is particular to the RX transmission; that will be obvious enough when you have them next to each other. you can also wire the diff lock switch using the wiring for the push button 4WD on the GL10 tranny as it uses the same vacuum solenoid. sorry i don't have a wiring diagram

but yes this is as easy as it sounds. and other RX parts that your wagon will like include the LSD, shocks/struts, strut rods, and sway bars.

trashwagon 6 has a full rx driveline swap, xt6 5lug, 87gl10 wagon. the dual range shifter is the same as regular dual range, but the single range shifter is different. you can pop the shifter knob off the single range by driving out the 2 pins.

on this car the old shifter hangs off the side and that is the diff lock! you can make a switch or put in an rx cover plate and make your own wiring in between. the s/r and diff lock mechanism is the same, but the plugs on the shift knob/diff lock switch are different

as far as driveshafts use your current one. same for clutch/flywheel/pp.

since its turbo the axles will fit the same, 25 spline. the plugs on the tranny itself may be different though.

when you engage the diff lock the 4wd lite comes on. you will have to be inventive to make indicator for lo-range. the switch is on the lever itself

Hmm.. to expand my knowledge of the subject, as I read this, I'm getting the feeling that with the exception of the vacuum operated diff lock, the FT D/R RX tranny is exactly the same as the PT D/R in the other EA models correct? The RX is a very elusive breed down in these parts, and I havent found one that I can peek up its skirt just yet.

Does it have an open locking center diff, or is it a locking clutch type LSD?

I know its not really on topic per se.. but it doe have to do with the swap/differences between the two trannies. Please enlighten me. :)
