Popping in slow, tight corners ('90 Leg AWD)

Recommended Posts

Please, help me troubleshoot this.

I've loved my '90 Legacy L AWD. A few months ago I noticed an occasional popping in slow, tight (90 degrees or more) cornering. The other weird thing about the problem is that it's "occasional." I can't make it happen. It just does it every so often. There is nothing I can do to induce the popping. It just happens. When it happens the whole ride of the car seems tight, like there's something holding the car from coasting freely, but this is only noticeable at low speeds. At high speeds nothing different is perceptible. Also, when it does happen and I park there is a big "clunk" sound when the shifter goes into park. And if I'm parked on anything short of level the car rolls about a foot downhill after I turn off the engine. (but only until the engine is turned off) So, to recap, the clunk happens at park and the "release" of the "tension" is only when the engine shuts off. Sometimes I can start her right up and she'll be normal. However, once in a while (rarely) the problem is there at start up.

I thought it was a CV joint problem because I've heard that this is a common problem for the car. I looked and sure enough the drivers side inner boot was shredded. Last month I had it replaced. The problem is still here. Now what???!!!

Any words of advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try installing a fuse in the FWD fuse holder in the engine bay, and see if your problem goes away.

If it does, you have an issue with the rear extension housing that supplies power to the rear wheels. I'd first suggest replacing the tranny fluid, and see if that helps.
