'96 Impreza Wagon Intermittent Knock

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a used '96 Impreza Wagon w/ 215,000 miles on it. Over the past couple of weeks, there has been intermittent knocking in the engine. Usually the knocking only lasts for that particular "run time," only to dissapear the next time I start the vehicle. However, the knocking has been constant for the past three days. I have read in other threads that cold weather can have be a factor regarding knocking, and we have had several days of below-freezing temps. I'm hoping that this is what is causing the problem...I will have to wait out Mother Nature to be sure. I guess I'm asking for any alternative explanations in the event that the problem is not weather related.

The engine is 2.2L. I've had the plugs, wires, filters, and oil changed before the problem began. Yesterday I checked the oil level (which was fine) and tossed in some injector cleaner with my fill up. Another symptom I'm having is a loss of power at lower RPM's. The engine will not forcefully respond until I hit around 2500 rpms, and then it will lurch forward with the expected power. I had this problem before my tune-up and was expecting the tune-up to fix the "power" situation, which it did not. No engine lights are on.

Any suggestions/ideas are extremely welcomed. TIA.
