Bought a XT limited. 2.5 lt Turbo. I also own a 91 Sub-loyale. Still runs strong too.

Wanted the 3.0R but hate the taupe seats that come with it, no other color avail with the 3.0R trust me.

The Turbo Motor is really strong and pulls like car-azy, some idiot in a Mercedes SUV tried, repeat tried, to keep up on I-5. Around 90mph I upshifted to 5th and left him fading into the rearview real quick. Pulls like a truck from about 3000 rpm to redline.

I don't drive like this everyday but on occasion I cut loose. What is the life expectancy of the turbo?

Thanks, I know subaru used to make GLs with a turbo. I was only interested in determining subaru turbo history. The Dealship said they last the life of the car, whatever that means. I bought the gold warrantee, the diffence of which would have been the difference between the 3.0R and the XT limited. The aftermarket is a good idea though. Too bad the 6 does not come with a black leather interior.

I am in full agreement over the 3.0. I was interested in it until I discovered the taupe color too. I really like the wood treatment, however, and thought it would look really nice with black. I also liked the gauges much better too. I am not a big fan of the XT instrumentation. I definitely prefered the white-face guages with the trim rings. Still would've ended up with the XT after the test drive anyway though. Just too bad the wife had to have an auto.

As for the turbo, I have to assume that Subaru has a good unit since they have been doing it for a long time. Having had Saabs with Garret turbos and then Mitsubishi turbos, I can definitely say that the Japanese have the turbo figured out to last as all my Mitsu turbo cars went well over 100k miles with no problem and they had way more pressure than what the Subaru has. Water cooling makes all the difference in terms of longevity. My experience with the Garret oil cooled versions was not so good and they required the requisite cool down before shut off period too. I'm assuming that Subaru uses their own turbos.

Despite the water cooling, I would use quality synthetic oil with turbo.

Heat and cheap dino oil is what kills turbo in no time.

Funny.. out of the 20+ turbo cars I have had (Saabs, Subarus, Volvos, Peugeots).. only a single one with under 100k.. a few well over 200k.. Never had a turbo crap out on me because of using dino oil. (or for any other reason)

Back on topic.. Which turbo does the XT use? Is it the same TD04 that the WRX uses?

I agree. I would only use a group IV oil in a turbocharged car, of course I use group IV oils in everything. If I owned an XT I would probably use Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40, Delvac 1 5w-40, or my current favorite Amsoil AFL 5w-40.

If you want a 30 weight I recommend German Castrol Syntec 0w-30 or Amsoil ATM 10w-30.

Irony. Suby uses the Mitsu turbos.

Well, that's good to know then. This being my first Subaru, I was not certain if they supplied their own turbos. I've never known a whole lot about this make which is why I joined this forum.

I've never been a big fan of Mitsu's offerings but I will praise their turbos for being durable.

Thanks for all the input guys. Its funny how subes use the Mitsu turbos. Quality for sure.

Here is a pic of me and the new XT at Mt Reba in the central sierra's. At altitude there is little decrease in performance.

I will post some with my girlfriend posing with the loyale today. Would do it now but dial up takes forever. AT work I have 10-baset ethernet.

NO PIC! I really wanted to see it, since I lived in Arnold and Dorrington for many years.

Can you still ski free on Mt. Reba? All us locals knew that there as a "ski home" trail all the way back to Bear Valley Lodge. So we would ride the free shuttle bus up to the top of the mountain, skip the pass purchase, ski down, hit the trail back to town and catch the next available ski bus.

BTW, in the early '70s there was one single Deputy Sheriff at Bear Valley, which is in Alpine County, not Calavaras County. If he arrested someone he had to drive them all the way around either north thru Trukee and Tahoe and back down, or clear down to Bakersfield, Tehachapi, Mojave, and all the way back up 395 to the county seat on the east side of the Sierras. As a result it was almost impossible to get arrested. People used to set up card tables on the sidewalk and sell pot, acid, 'shrooms ... as long as there was no coke or horse Deputy Dawg would just look the other way. Talkaboutcher 'counter cluture'. Now they have an intercounty agreement and the Calavaras Co. fuzz will do the deed for Alpine Co.

In those days my winter snow vehicle was a 1931 Model AA Ford truck, 12" flatbed, dual wheels and TALL narrow tires ... go thru anything.

AH memories, I'm surprised I've still got 'em.

I would also use a synth oil. However, I don't think mineral oil would spell disaster. The most important thing is to idle engine and let the turbo cool before shutting off after a "hot" drive.

Bear this in mind when you pull over for gas after a motorway cruise!

Yeah,

Sorry. My picture was too large to load. I will try again when I bring a CDrom to work. Yes you can still ski the mountain for free. Yes "home run" still exsists.

I was raised in Stockton, CA. I graduated in 1983. I remember Deputy Dawg well. "Bear" is still alive and well. The place has not changed. The cafeteria is now Roberts Pizza. Other than that it is like a flashback to the 1970's. Totally unchanged. There is a music festival up there every year you should check it out. Its one of the few places in California that, in my opinion that has escaped the influx of big money etc......
