1999 outback transmission failure!

Recommended Posts

Hi all. My 1999 outback stopped going into drive today. It was hesitating when I went from park or reverse to drive for a few seconds. But today,

it was in drive, I stopped at a light and it would not go forward. After many attempts it finally moved forward and I drove to a sub dealer that was luckily right across the street! The guy there said that this dealer didn't do trans work but he knew someone who did. Then he said it would be 3-4 THOUSAND DOLLARS for a rebuilt trans! That seems a little high, doesn't it?

Anyone know what a rebuilt transmission should be?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank!!

I believe that amount is about right for a rebuilt transmission purchased from Subaru. There are, of course, other alternatives. The 4EAT transmission is used by several car manufacturers. If you have a trustworthy tranny shop in your town you may look into having rebuilt/repaired locally.

HI "The Dude". Thanks for the repley. By the way, what is a "The 4EAT transmission"? Would it be considerably cheaper? I'm thinking of getting it towed out of the "sacrificial Lamb slaughterhouse" dealer and to a transmission place. Thanks again. Could it be something other than a transmission? They are going to check it tomorrow. I just asumed it was a transmission. It paused before moving when I put it in drive. Today, it was in drive, I stopped at a light... light turned green, hit the gas...car no move. Finally, after a few attempts, it engaged into drive and I got to the dealer. Thanks again for the relpley.

"4EAT" is the model number of the AT used by Subaru. Do a search for "4EAT" on this board, you should get a lot of good information. A Subaru rebuilt, dealer installed tranny is probably the most expensive way to go. BTW, how many miles on your OB?

is this All Wheel Drive? also curious how many miles it has.

i'd double check the fluid before assuming there's thousands of dollars worth of damage. make sure there is fluid in there and it's not all jacked up.

personally, i'd find a used unit and install it WITH a transmission cooler. your transmission should last much longer with a cooler installed. well worth the tiny 30 dollars investment in a cooler. personally i'd rather buy 2 used units really cheap (actually i just get them from my parts cars or trade for them) than spend 3-4 thousand on a new one. i traded for a used 4EAT and have put 50,000 miles on it so far, runs great. free is much better than 3/4,000 dollars. when i installed my trans i was still doing physical therapy for separating my shoulder so i asked a transmission shop how much it would cost to install a transmission if i supplied the trans. they said 150-200 to install my transmission with a new filter. i ended up just doing it myself. no way i'd ever spend that much loot. much cooler things i can do with 3,000 dollars than spend it on something i can just get done for a few hundred. last time i looked for an older model 4EAT i found one for 250.00. seen them for less than that before. this is for the XT6 older model 4EAT's though so it's not a bolt up version for your car.

Hi grossgary. 120.000 miles. It is an all wheel drive. 1999 outback. Ammco

said it would be 2200 to 2400 to rebuild the transmission. Still too high.

I'm going to start looking for a used one. :drunk:

I had my transmission in my 1999 outback rebuilt about a year ago and it was around $2500.
