super swampers on the road?

just wondering, i was cookin pretty good on the way to work today. my spedos way off, so who knows how fast.

my question is, if i have super swampers, will i still be able to go fast on the highway?

i know they are a mud tire, but do they grip the road well? the only experience i have with anything close to a mud tire, is some 31 inch bfg ATs on my 4 runner. those tires still feel good at speed.

 

any suggestions? this is my commuter =]

I love my tires, the only time they're loud is if I'm moving slow and I get on the brakes hard. My mpg on the highway is waaaayyy better, in town not as good. Cornering is excellent I've only slid the rear out on ashphalt once and that was a wet highspeed off camber corner. Screw SS tsl's or whatever, checkout interco's TrXus tires. I'll try to post pics latr, there's some in the rim probs thread 1st page.

Same company makes both. The TrXus are cool looking tires. But the smallest they come is 30", right? Not many people want or even can run that size of tire. I looked at them briefly but chose the proven capability of the SSR(radial version of the TSL). Best rated all-round off-road tire on the market by Off Road magazine.

 

I'm not arguing the point on which tires to buy or use. Each individual has their own opinion. Mine is based on my actual experiences and preferences.

 

To answers Arch's question. The swampers will feel pretty stable. They may feel a little soft on hard corners. Part of that may also be attributed to the fact that I run without a sway bar up front. I didn't notice any ill-effects from street driving.

should be fine, but I'd take 'em off for your trips to TX :grin:

I had SS's on my Ford powerstroke f-350, great all round offroad tire fur sure but in IMO crap on the road, too loud and the tire compound is too hard for snow and ice. I like to stay awake on long commute and SS's are to loud and hypnotic for me. Screw SS's is my personal bias, that is what he asked for personal opinions. Trxus's come in 29'sx10.5 [which I run] and interco said they might have a 27x9.5 next year. They are the best offroad/onroad tire I've run, period. Mud, Snow, Rocks, and Sand. I've not had them in wet clay yet, but everything else and they are stellar especially on ice and snow. I'm planning on a write up for Zapar's tire sticky but I feel that I'd better have more time on these tires otherwise someone might question my experience.:)

The SSR's aren't near as loud as the TSL's(nylon). Those would wake the dead and then hypnotise them asleep again.

 

If you want an offroad tire for street use the BFG's are hard enough to stand up to day to day street use but good enough for the weekend road trip. Swampers are too expensive to wear them out on the street!

No kiddin!!! Up here in commie land we have the actual tire cost, then enviro levies, GST/PST which is a 14.5% tax, plus disposal charges, makes a $1000 dollars in tires $1400. Taxes on taxes yeah socialism. For the SS's I ordered it took 10 weeks for them to get trucked up from the states!

oh man, my head hurts lookin at so many tires and writeups.

 

it seems to me that most of the stuff i read on the web, doesnt realy apply to me(or subarus in general).

everybody runs them on big ole fords, and mudder trucks, and our cars weigh like sports cars, not full size trucks.

am i thinkin right? they would be less loud, and unstable, on such a small car? or louder and worse?

For what it's worth, or if it helps, I'm planning on getting an extra set of rims just for dedicated off-road tires. Since I use my Brat as a daily driver, it makes good sense not to wear out mudders running back and forth to work. It doesn't take much time to swap out wheels when I need to get out and about.

I'm on 28/8.5/14 TSL's

 

1. as mentioned before they are soft on corners

 

2. Loud isn't the word for it. Then again my interior is gutted, no sound deadening from carpet etc.

 

3. The flat spot on the tyres in the morning is way cool, like riding a 10 cent super market horse.

 

4. I've have mine on for about two years as a daily driver and their just getting to the point of needing replaced

 

5. $80 a tyre isn't bad, but it is relative to your financial position.

 

6. If you drive them low on air they will wear out 4x as fast as normal (don't ask)

 

7. I've not had any problems on ice snow mud or street, of course you need to drive responsibly and intellegently.

 

Hope this helps you decide, but that's what it boils down to is your decision. Later, Tim

Just want to point out that the Chef uses the bias ply, however still an excellent evaluation. I, like Ken use the SSR Radial, while i wouldn't reccomend them for a daily driver, i swear by them offroad, mine are siped so they don't do too bad on the road either, but keep your distance, stopping is a hit or miss issue, its the weight not the tread thats the biggest issue. They are pretty quiet though, but you will hear the road more somthing about the ticking from the engine having an easier chance from getting out from under the car with the increased space
