Lets compare the Legacy and the Mustang

After finding out the specs of the new Ford Mustang, I had to laugh. What a piece of crap. A redesigned 4.0L V6 that only gets 210 HP. Come on, my 9 year Legacy gets 165Hp and thats with a significantly smaller engine. And the fact that the new Legacy Turbo gets 255Hp just made me wonder what the hype about the Mustang is and why people waste their money on that kinda car rather than a decent one.

The Mustang is an "approved" car for the popular market. If you own it or like it then you are in the in crowd. The new legacy Turbo is an even far better comparison. But even then you can't convince some folks, after my Vishnu stage III STI whooped a new gen Viper the comment was "well, it's still just a Subaru."

I dont like the new mustang body, it reminds me heavily of a cartoon version of the 1st gens, and if I wanted that I'd buy my bf's 66 and paint it lime green. That and it's just not a Mustang unless it has a powerplant under the hood, give me a foxbody 5.0 any day over that one! ;)

 

I actually ended up playing freeway tag with a turd in a new mustang today, either his response time is off or his car just sucks, got him off the line at the onramp and kept speeding around him lol maybe he was surprised at a female who can really drive her car.

I drive a 95 Mustang GT convertible every day and own a 99 outback wagon which I drive regularly. Both great cars in their own way, and much nicer than owning two 99 outback wagons would be. There is room in the world for both legacy and mustang to exist. The build quality utility and all weather capability is better on my Subaru, but comfort and performance, resale and even fuel economy probably are in the mustang's favor. It even gets around pretty well in snow. Looking at published test track data, the new V6 mustang will hold it’s own against the Legacy Turbo, or nearly so. That’s not a fair comparison though, as Turbo Legacy pricing puts it up against the GT. Now there’s no comparison as far as performance, but that’s also a moot point. I doubt many people would cross shop the two, but the day may come where I will have one of each. I have driven a 2005 GT just a couple of miles, but that was enough to know incredible improvements have been made to the new mustangs as far as solidness, features and especially performance go. As far as styling, I think the 94 to 98 Mustangs are the prettiest of all with the 67 to 69 a close runner up. The 2005’s are a good update and more than a mere retro makeover as has been charged. Peple can make up their own mind over styling anyway.

You may as well compare a lawn mower with a sailboat. They share about as much in common as a Mustang and a Legacy. Two entirely different target buyers, categories, and much more. The 'stang is more of a lifestyle vehicle(the GT, anyway), while the Subaru is more about reliable, safe transportation for families. Just my .02.

The V6 Mustang starts at about $19,400 and the base 2.5i Legacy starts around $21,300. One is a kids' coupe and the other is a family sedan. I don't know that they're comparable.

 

The V8 Mustang and 2.5GT are closer in price, but I still don't see the sense in comparing them.

My intention for posting this thread was to compare their engines and really just point out how crappy the new Mustang engine is. So the new Boxer turbo engine, 2.5L, 4 cylinders = 255HP. The new Mustang engine, 4.0L, V6 = 210 HP. Mustang's is bigger by alot and produces far less.

 

And even if you looked at the 4.6L mustang, that gets 300 HP. Theres still the WRX STi which is the 2.5L and gets 300 HP. But obviously the STi cost alot more.

But, in the end, it's like comparing a Harley-Davidson to a sport bike. Even a 600cc sport bike will outrun, out-turn, out-stop and generally run circles around a Harley. So what? To Harley guys, it doesn't matter how fast their bikes are, it's how cool they are. :rolleyes:

 

Harley riders stopped bragging about performance in 1969 when Honda introduced the CB-750. And Ford isn't going to brag about performance, the whole purpose of that Mustang is so rapidly aging boomers can fantasize about being the coolest kid in High School one last time before they go to the Old Folks home.

Never been a Ford man, but I will have to say that I like the the looks of the new Mustang. Haven't driven one, and probably won't be in one anytime soon either. Still, you are comparing a base V6 to an upper end turbo charged 4 cylinder. I didn't compare price, so I can't tell you anything there as far as a "balanced" comparison against the two in that regard. The Ford has 240 lb torque @ 3500rpm and the Sube 250 lb torque @ 3600 rpm. The Ford also gets 28mpg v/s the Subaru 25mpg.

 

The V6 is the "transportation" Mustang. Ford has to make the V6 a bit anemic in order to make the v8 cars seem that more performance orientated. If all Ford made was a V6, then you'd see more oomph from the V6. I don't keep up with Ford, but I'm sure a much higher performance Mustang than the 300hp on is sure to roll out this summer. Not defending the blue oval--just saying it's hard to compare a base engine to a top package engine.

 

Now, I drive a Sube and love Subaru, but if I must say the sound of a V8 engine is much more pleasant than a whirry turbo-charged 4 banger. My hometown hosts the annual Grand National event and I love those cars--bak when the US auto makers had enough balls to make a car like that--but even they don't sound "right" when they pull up to the christmas tree compared to some old rumbling V8.

 

Subaru cars are great, but there is no way to compare them to RWD cars that are built to appeal to "American car" folks looking for vehicles that remind them of the glory days of Detroit...which have pretty much faded. It's like comparing Apple to Microsoft--people like what they like. You may not like Mustangs, but I don't think you can call a car "crap" becuase of a stat sheet. I'll bet they are fun to drive. The look damn cool, and have a much more distinct style--an attractive distinctness--compared to Japanese cars in the same price range.

my opinion is that some people are like lemmings, they'll follow anything.just to be part of the in crowd.i believe that's what got me into subarus.at the time when i got into them which was like 8yrs ago they were considered the underdog. :headbang:subarus rule !!!! rock on

OK, my intention was not compare the actual cars themselves but what was going on underneath the hood. I understand why Ford would have a base model with lesser power but 210 HP is still pretty weak for such a large engine.

 

And the fact that the WRX STi with a 2.5L has as much power as a 4.6L V8 is something that Subaru should pride themselves on. And it does get better gas mileage but obviously is less affordable to buy.

 

And I like the sound my 4 bangor emits thank you very much.

I think we need to do a showdown between the two and compare apples to oranges on the track and drag strip. The Sube would win against the V6 Stang, but I bet you'd have more fun in the Mustang than you'd like to admit. The torque of the two engines is almost the same, and torgue has more to do with snap your neck oomph than does horsepower. If I were plunking down the bills for a new car, I'd go for the Sube, but I'd still stare at the Mustang at the stoplight. And, NOTHING sounds sweeter than a V8 engine with dual exhaust...

The 2.5L normally aspirated Subaru won't outrun anything except maybe a fully loaded dumptruck.

Take one with an automatic tranny,(like mine), and even passing the dumptruck becomes a challenge.

The Subaru's weight pretty well kills any chance of it becomming a street light racer.

The 210HP Mustang would easily smoke the 2.5L 165HP Subaru in any race,(except in the snow).

Have you tried flooring it? Flip that switch to 'SPORTSHIFT', grab that lever, throw it down, and punch it! :grin:

 

I had NO problems passing dumptrucks, or any other truck, in my EJ22 with 4EAT using 'shift lock' and slapping that paddel shifter.

Unfortunately I don't think Subarus are so anti-mainstream anymore. The half hour I spent on a dealership showfloor recently almost made me puke with all the freeking people with no clue..."So is this a four?" "Oh...can you get it in a six?" And the sales person can't even explain why a flat four will outperform most standard V6s.
