2004 WRX Salvage Title (Help looking for opinions)

Recommended Posts

I have won a final bid on an 04 Impreza WRX but it has a salvage title & has been completely repaired. The car has ONLY 3600 miles on it (3.6k). I have called the TX DMV and verified it CAN be registered. My wife called Allstate and verified that the car CAN be covered after both TX state & Allstate inspections. I feel confident it will pass all. I have also run a Carfax on the car as well. The price is only $13900 for this car and I can NEVER afford a new one like this as they are 25k new. Here are my questions, WHY would you NOT buy this vehicle after knowing this info? What should I be thinking about, but might not be? Am I concerned for no reason perhaps? I could use as many opinions as possible please as tomorrow I will either close the deal or pull out. Thanks in advance :-)

Drive it first!!!!! Look for half a$$ed repair in spots where it was fixed and ask if they have "before" pics of the car. I personally would do it if I was looking for a WRX (and was watching ebay myself at one time for a WRX wagon). Lastly look to see if it has an aftermarket BOV (blow off valve)...this will indicate that most likely a kid owned the car and beat on it.

Just remember that the resale value is severely reduced with a repaired car but if you are planning on keeping it so what.

Let me inject a personal bias here....I wouldn't trust anything that an Allstate rep tells me--get it in writing. However, that being said, get a 2nd and 3rd opinion from other insurance carriers since if you ever find you have to sell the car it wouldn't necessarily go with an Allstate insured buyer. Lastly, get as much written documentation on the repairs made as possible so that you know exactly what you're getting and have it on file on the off chance that you have to sell the car in the future. A verbal "car runs just fine and never gave me any trouble" will not convince a potential buyer in the future.

If it was professionally repaired, there should be no problem. Just remember, the salvage title will effect any resale, and may limit the type of insurance that you can get.

I also wouldn't do it if i didn't have the time or money to do more repairs, you never know what could go wrong, and i think its safe to say that this car will probably have some more problems then a car that wasn't in a bad wreck. I'd also be sure you plan on keeping this car forever, it won't be easy to sell it and it will be worth very little. That being said keep in mind that you are saving over $10,000 it sounds like so even if you have to spend $2000 on repairs over the next year because it was poorley repaired you are still coming out ahead.
