'96 legacy wagon fuel capacity

Recommended Posts

I've searched high and low for this information. The only value I can find is 60 litres, which is almost 16 gallons. My gas gauge says I'm empty, but the car only takes 10-11 gallons. My mileage is around 24 mpg, and the tank will get me 240 miles. Could it be a faulty gas gauge? I figured there's one way to truly find out on my own...but I traverse a lot of area with no cell phone coverage and little traffic flow. Running out of gas is not an option. If anyone can indeed confirm that this model has a 60 liter tank I would appreciate it.

the fuel senders get dirty on these models and the result is reads low by about a quarter of a tank. They are pretty easy to clean, if concerned in the meantime, the capacity you are quoting sounds about right. If equipped, the low fuel light does not lose it's accuracy and can be relied on pretty much. there are lots of threads about cleaning the two fuel sending units. One time, you could carry a gallon of gas in a can and run to empty or low light comes on, You should be able to go a bit over 300 miles on a full tank so long as there isn't any problem that turns the pump off while fueling before it is full.

The capacity is 15.9 USG. These sending units are apparently notorious. I recently thought my low fuel light was broken because I was way down where it usually comes on and it wasn't on yet...NO...alas I can now run way below the last line on the gauge. What I do is reset the trip mileage everytime I fill up and I can count on 300-350 miles before I need to worry. This will be a fun project for summer (cleaning the units).

Thanks for the excellent info. I will search the threads for the "fix" of the gas gauge. It's nice to know that I'm not losing my mind. Also, I reset the trip odometer every fill-up, as I calculate my mpg everytime I hit the pump.

In a somewhat related note (mpg), I was able to increase my mpg by using progressive shifting. Unless I need the power (passing, entering road), I rarely get the tachometer to 3000 rpms. My mpg went up about 2 mpg. Obvioulsy I rarely hit the interstate...all driving done on back country roads and state highways.

The info I have is 15.8 USGal. Yes, there are two sending units. Not the senders are not broken, just a but gunked up. they need to be cleaned, not replaced. In the wagon, they are easy to get to, being right under the floorboard in the cargo area behind the rear seat. I would also leave the job for summer, knowing what Illinois winters can be like. . . This is a job that is best done outside with plenty of fresh air. . . Other than that, it is an easy job to fix. if you want to check to see how far you can go on a tank, you can carry a 5 gal can of gas with you in the cargo area (you will not need it until you get real low, so fill it up then. . .) and run it until the low fuel light comes on. then get to a gas station, and fill up (the 5 gal gas can is insurance).

Looking back over my logs, the most I have been able to fit into a single tank is 14.4 Gal, and the low fuel light was on then. IIRC, it is set for two gal above a dry tank, so you should have about 40 miles range once the light comes on. I get between 250 and 350 between fillups with a 92 Legacy (and you show better milage than me. . .)
