As you can see the vehicle has little daily use by the mileage. It’s mainly used for motorway journeys of 60 miles plus. The supply dealer has diagnosed the problem with the rear axle viscous coupling and informs me that the UK importer will only supply a complete axle assembly. The symptoms are, when pulling away from a road junction where one is applying nearly full steering lock there is a pronounced judder from the back of the car, in all other modes there is no problem either in noise or vibration.

Can you give a little more detail to the problem?

Are you talking of a viscous coupling in the rear differential? That model of Outback did not get anything but an open diff in the rear in North America.

 

Some of the late 90's Legacys had problems with the center clutch pack. Have you put the FWD fuse in to rule that out? It was a bigger issue with the 96's and 97's to my knowledge.
