EA81 swap Questions

Recommended Posts

OK, here's the deal. I got a 3 day weekend and I'm swappin' motors in the Brat dammit. I would love to hear any feedback that would make this (first time)attempt not go backwards. I'll be taking the motor and trans from an 85 donor and placing it into another identical Brat. Would it be easier(doing 99% by myself) to separate the motor and trans or could I theoretically pull the entire unit out? What should I replace while I have the motor out? Is there anything quirky about this swap? I apologize if these are simple questions but I've never done this before and have yet to get bum advice from the board. First things first am I crazy for even thinking I can do this in a weekend? Any help is appreciated and definately needed. In return, if there's anything I can do for anyone else let me know. P.S. I have an 82 Brat that I trailored from a yard that has to go.....who wants it? First offer over 50 bucks gets it. Auto, bad body, good moto,t-tops,no jumpers.Hell, I could put the tops on e-fray for that. Anway, as always you guys rule and I'll wait for all the quick and easy 1 step no problem easy as changing a fuse answers. Thanks in advance for looking.

I smell a dancing banana opportunity

Thinking that I've read that you can pull both the engine and tranny together. Not sure, haven't done it.. On pulling the engine, make sure to clearly label all electrical lines, as well as all vacuum, and fuel lines. You can just unbolt the intake manifold, and set it in the spare tire area. This will eliminate the disconnecting of the lines. and subsequent nightmare of re-attaching them. While you have the engine out, replace both the front and rear crank seals, may also want to replace the clutch setup if it's a manual trans. May even want to replace the oil pump at this time. Probally wouldn't hurt to replace the valve cover gaskets too. Be mindfull of the exhaust to head bolts, they like to break off, or strip out. A good soaking of rust penitrant will help, and/or some heat. You should be able to do the swap in the 3 days, providing you have all the parts when you start, along with the nessecary lifting devices. Take your time, don't try to rush things. If something isn't going smoothly, take a break for a bit. It does help... To bad you live to far away from me, I'd take that '82 BRAT in a heartbeat. If it don't sell, are you going to part it out? I could use afew items off of it, I'll pay the shipping costs. Later, and good luck...................

the one time i tried to put a motor and trans in together, i had to hald disassemble the rear part of the frame, and get the car WAY up in the air.

here is what i would do. pull the motors first out the top. then pull the transmissions out the bottom. then install the trans' in through the bottom. place a jack under the trans and raise it up past the front crossmember, so the motor will line up with it.

now, is the 85 an ea82? it will be different, but it will work. the trans id not going to fit exactly under the tunnel, not without beating the tunnel out, cutting away at it, or stacking washers between the crossmember and the body

the ea82 motor will fit, but take out the distributor so you can get it in past the brake master cylinder. if you leave the 4spd trans in, and use the ea82, use the ea82 flywheel and pressure plate and the 4spd's clutch disc.

give a few more specifics about both vehicles, and what motor, trans they have, and we can be more specific about procedure and which parts to mix.

it can be done either way, but we need to know more specifics to tell you how to do it!

A sawzall just ahead of the strut towers on each side will get it out in less than 20 minutes! Use a 9" metal blade!

Just rolls right out!:D

I did it and kept the struts, motor, tranny, crossmember all as a unit. I even left the tires on!:burnout: wished I'd have left it in neutral:banghead:

I wouldn't try this w/o a cherry picker though:eek:

This may or may not work for your application, but it sure worked well for mine.:-)

Good luck

01 Forester, runs away when I get out the cherry picker....
