lager68 Posted March 3, 2005 Share Posted March 3, 2005 So I've had my 97 outback limited for several weeks now, and it did perform flawlessly in the recent snow we've had, but I gotta tell you that this thing is not getting the mileage that I thought it would, it being a four cylinder and all! Can anyone tell me the gallon capacity of the gas tank on my new car? So far I'm getting just under two hundred miles per tankload, is this average for these vehicles, and if so why the poor mileage? is this because of AWD? Thanks all! hklaine Posted March 3, 2005 Share Posted March 3, 2005 How many gallons is it taking on a fill-up? These cars are notorious for their inaccurate fuel gauges. The sender usually gets dirty and just needs to be removed/cleaned (not a tough job on the wagon). My gauge reads E at about 230 miles, but only takes ~10 gallons to fill at that point. later, Peter Posted March 3, 2005 Share Posted March 3, 2005 There was just a recent thread regarding mileage... gas mileage in winter months is usually 10 - 20% less than in warmer weather... the gas being sold has additives for pollution control. Other factors come into play... O2 sensor, air filter clogged, type of driving & then there's that pesky fuel guage... drive, fill it up, set the tripmeter, drive, fill it up, check the # of gallons to the tripmeter, & do it all again.... If the problem is the actual fuel mileage and not just the perceived mileage (junk gauge) then these are certainly the first things to check. Also, you may want to run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and/or dry-gas through the system and check your spark plug for wear and correct gap.
