Snowman Posted August 28, 2003 Share Posted August 28, 2003 The EGR valve can be cleaned quite easily, although it can be difficult to remove on later carb models b/c of other stuff in the way. As far as I know, your two cars use the same one, and even if they aren't exactly identical, they can be interchanged without any problems. If you need to get a new one, just go to a junkyard and grab one after inspecting it and testing it's functionality (suck on the the vacuum hose that controls it, and if the little pin moves and opens the port, it's good). c150L Posted August 28, 2003 Share Posted August 28, 2003 I had 2 Subes that had the EGR code and found the soleniod was burned out on both. (No continuity through it.) There's nothing monitoring the EGR valve itself. (Maybe on later models. I know Ford does that with an EGR position switch.). The local Sube dealer told me $133 for the EGR soleniod. I'm already using the black tape fix, but when it comes time to smog her I'm gonna need a new one. Is it the same solenoid on both of my cars? I had the same thing happen on my 87 spfi I went to the wrecking yard and bought 3 of them for $5. actually got 2 that worked. I may still have the spare here somewhere. I will look, but no guarantees.. after the big move, I don't know what I have, or where its at. I know that I got rid of 99.9% of my spare parts(no , I didn't throw them away, passed them on to a deserving board member).. But if you have a cheap yard with lots of soobs anywhere near you, grab a handful of those solenoids.. one is bound to work. When standing in front of your car, it is on the left side of the throttle body, attached directly to the manifold. there are 2 solenoids there. One is the EGR solenoid, and one is for the purge control. Can't remember for sure, but I think the Egr solenoid is the one closer to the firewall.. might be wrong about that.. you should trace the vacuum hose from the valve to the solenoid to be sure of which one it is.
