A few MT driving style questions.

Redline is at 6k. How fast is it okay to take the engine every day? For occasional expressway merging? When the engine is cold?

Is it okay to skip gears? Let's say I want to pull out in to traffic, quickly get up to 45mph, then cruise at that speed. Would it be okay to take it up to 45mph in 3rd, then shift directly into 5th? I've heard some people say yes, others say no.

45mph in 5th gear = 2000 rpm. I could leave it in 5th gear while decelerating towards a red light until about 15mph = 700 rpm, which is a little higher than idle speed. Does it matter how long I wait to put it in neutral? Does the computer still inject fuel even if the car's momentum is used to keep the engine spinning?

Well, my cars are subjected to redline chasing many times everyday. Two things to consider though: NEVER when cold and I replace oil and filter every 6-7k miles.

When cold, try to avoid more than half-throttle openings and never go above 4000rpm. Don't take this theory overboard and "lug" the engine. Any deep vibrations means you're stressing the engine. Keep in mind that lower gears are "easier" for the engine to pull.

In general, even on a warm engine, don't force it to do any work (accelerate, pull uphill) below 2500rpm in 4th and 5th, and below 2000rpm in 3rd.

Coasting up to red lights you should get into neutral around 1500rpm, since the ECU will start to inject fuel again at this engine speed. Above there, any coasting is saving you fuel!

For everyday driving I like to shift between 3-4k rpm in my MY00 OBW. If I'm passing on a 2 lane road I'll shift down and get up to 4.5-5k.

Brain, MT driving is real simple:

1. NEVER pull out in front of a logging truck.

2. Deer always have the right-of-way.

3. When driving 90+ on the interstate stay in the right lane so the Highway Patrol can pass you safely.

4. PASS the damn snowplow, you can't see diddley behind him, that's what you have AWD for!

5. Keep the beer in the cup holder directly in front of the air cond. vent, it gets warm in your crotch ... 'sides it's still legal here.

The redline is overrated. my legacy's 2.2l motor sounds sweet up there. I've taken mine up to 8K, just to see if it would, then dumped the clutch. Mmmm... nice smells. The engine still runs fine. I'wouldn't do that on a daily basis though. My dad has the opposite driving style, he always shifts befor 3k. His engine has been going fine for years. They are surprisingly flexible motors.

i say shift when you want to, its your car and your gas money, but i wouldnt "get on it" until motor comes up to operating temp, and a little after that, make sure your oil isnt sludge in the crankcase. redline is a suggestion of the highest point of rpm that a motor can experience without valve float, it is wise to stay under that line.
