Mixed ATF w/ front diff gear oil....help!

Recommended Posts

I am a new outback owner and did my first transmission fluid change and mistakenly added trans fluid into the front differential gear oil chamber. Will this break down the gear oil during driving or should I have this towed to a mechanic to have this gear oil changed out?

In general, ATF does not damage gear oil, and is often added by some people to either thin out gear oil or help clean things out (it is high detergent).

I think that you could just drain the differential case well, refill and run for a while, and probably drain/refill again.

yeah, you'll be just fine. i'd drain it overnight and refill it and never think twice.

i once started to top off my car's oil with ATF (grabbed the wrong bottle), right in front of a friend. he's a gearhead too so we both just laughed at me.

ATF is a high preassure lubricant & so is gear oil. Drain it out & put some new gear oil in. If you can't drain it yourself it won't hurt a thing to drive to the dealer or to the local oil change place & have it drained & refilled.

How much did ya put in til it overflowed?

You're fine changing it on your own if you did the ATF. The plug is in front of it. I think it takes like a 22mm or something weird like that. You should need like 2 quarts of dif oil.
