91 Legacy Driveability Problem

Recommended Posts

I have a 91 Legacy Wagon with a 2.2 16V engine. Here's the problem:

Stats: 192K on the odo, 5spd. It starts and runs fine until it gets up to operating temp then the fun starts.

It shudders and misfires badly when the engine is placed under any sort of load (accelerating onto freeway onramp e.t.c) and sometimes at idle it shudders and acts like it wants to die (but never does - yet).

Here's what I have done so far:

New fuel and air filter, new plugs, O2 sensor and coil. I have run Seafoam through the intake and in the fuel. The spark plug wires were replaced about 18 months ago.

After doing the above, the problem diminished some but it didn't go away. The car still runs crappy.

What next?

I ran the code(s) in the U-test mode and came up with this:

11, 12, 23, 24, 35

That seems like alot of codes but reading the book #12 is for the starter switch which should'nt be a big deal (right?) since it's a given that the switch is on.

Which leaves me with the others 11=crank angle sensor, 23=airflow sensor, 24=air control valve, 35=purge control solenoid.

What are the chances that only one or two of these are the culprits and are causing other malfunctions?

Where is the most likely place to start?

I had a 91 with the same symtoms after inspecting the plugs some of them had carbon on them, indicating that the spark was traveling down the outside of the insulator, so after changing the plugs and fuel filter a new set of wires fixed the problem, good luck with yours

Does the CEL stay on, or is it off, and those were the codes that showed up?

What I'd do is clear the codes, drive the car for a little bit, and see what codes come back. That will help narrow down what the culprit might be.

I cleared all codes and have driven it about 30 miles since. No CEL and no more codes (yet). Still runs like crap.

I am going to check the convertor(s) today to see if they are plugged.
