burning oil NEED HELP #$@#%@ pissed off

Recommended Posts

i have a 1996 2.5 legacy i seem to be burning about a half qt a wk on a 200 mile work wk my friend drove behind me and said he seen smoke come out of the tailpipe when i downshifted and got on it alittle bit if im burning oil how much time do i have left on this engine? also when i drive for awhile sometimes the car when i press the gas it dont wanna go and then it will just like take off if i let of the gas alittle bit does this sound like a fuel pump or sensor or could this have something to do with it burning oil. i have had numerous things done to this car already like head gasket, crank shaft seals, timig belt, plugs AND wires , coil ,radiator , water pump etc etc etc etc someone PLEASE HELP

If you're burning oil, your piston rings are worn, plain and simple. Sounds pretty badly too considering the amount of oil you're going through.

As for the other issue, what is etc etc etc. Be more specific. You mention plug wires, but not plugs themselves. But to be honest with you, it's probably sensor related, like the TPS or MAF. Do some searches here on hesitation and you will find something useful.

It could also be the valve guide seals. Were these replaced when

the head gaskets were done? When you down shift the engine

vacuum tries to pull oil past piston rings and valve guide seals.

Then when you get back on the throttle you see a puff of smoke.

Compression test would help to rule out rings.

2nd this one.

I would inspect the PCV system and make sure everything is clean and all the hoses are in good shape and not clogged up. New OEM PCV valve. If the crankcase pressure is high, it will force oil out of seals, or past the rings.

if i bring my ca rto subaru will it cost me and arm and leg for a diagnostic check and will that be able to loacate the problem ? and yes i have also changed the plugs and the wires if i was blowing oil through my valves could that cause hesitation ?

hard to say just reading about it, but i'd guess the valve stem seals as well. piston rings or stem seals the good news is this isn't that big of a deal...if you don't mind adding oil every now and again. oil leaks don't really mean anything, just keep oil in it. with new headgaskets, timing belts and water pump this motor could last a really long time. might go through more oil than the average car, but who cares oil is inexpensive. you're going to go through more gas than a hybrid car, who cares if you go through more oil than other cars? on older cars people routinely need to add a couple quarts of oil between oil changes, no big deal just slightly annoying. the great news is that it's not leaking, that's really annoying. although leaks are typically easier to repair than burning oil but clouds of smoke choking you out as the oil drips on your exhaust at a redlight....boo for that.

i wouldn't bother taking it to a dealer. they'll charge an rump roast load of money to diagnose it properly or just give you a really high number to fix it since they'll guess it's the valve stem seals or piston rings so they'll likely give you the higher of the two numbers. (which will be really big).

how many miles? i say the valve stem seals should have been replaced when the head gaskets were done but i bet they were not.

if you're really interested in fixing it get a leak down test done (i wouldn't go to a dealer, i wouldn't trust them to do it right. they'll assume it's something and just tell you that and say they did the leak down test...unless you really trust your dealer). after the leak down test you'll either need the valve stems replaced or a new block (if it's the piston rings...which i would doubt). new block would be much more expensive obviously. i'd fix this myself eventually (i would wait awhile and woudlnt be in any rush since the motor will be fine) but if i had to pay someone to do it, i'd forget all of this and keep adding oil myself.

I would change the PCV and do a double treatment of http://www.auto-rx.com.

This product has shown amazing results in freeing oil rings and improving compression in high mileage engines. I know, sounds like snake oil, but worse case you'll have a really clean engine. Much cheaper than any internal engine work even if you do it yourself.

Another option if the problem is stuck oil rings is to go to BITOG and search for molasoak. It's a technique for cleaning the rings that one of the chemists there developed.

to answer the question about miles i have 94000 on it not that much. most people tell me that subarus are good for atleast 150000 as long as i keep the oil up in it.plus i have done a bunch of new things to it about 27 hundred dollars worth im hoping it will last me for awhile also i need to no the symptoms of a bad fuel pump my car hesitates on acceleration exept when the car is cold

At this mileage, I wouldn't think it's the piston rings, unless it's been overly abused, like running without oil.
