radio/tape player troubleshooting

Recommended Posts

I own a 93 legacy and a few weeks ago i put a tape into the tape deck and it went in a little rough. I later ejected it and ever since that the radio wont work because it thinks there is a tape in the player. I was just wandering if anyone had any ideas about what is wrong or what I can do to fix it. Thanks

You can try a head cleaning tape and see if that works. You might need to take it apart and clean the mechanisms. Or you can do what I did and install a new Panasonic CD Player. They fit perfectly in the brackets. You can have it installed or do it yourself. Pretty easy to do.

What's a cassette?

lol

Id first try using one of those air in a can things (you can get them at most electronic/computer places, theyre used to clean electronics) Im not sure a tape deck is worth taking apart to clean, then again if I have any tapes I dont know where they are...if you want you can buy my old factory tape deck, it's sitting on the top of my pioneer deck in my car lol, I just pulled the cubby hole but now Im starting to miss it

I want to put a CD player in place of my cassette player. Could you give me the model number? Was it just plug and play or did you have to get the soldering iron out? No special installation kit for the car Model?

Frag,

I assume you are aware of the wire adapter harnesses available to match the new deck with the cars radio plug so you don't have to cut the original wiring up. Check out Crutchfield.com if you are looking for a good place for help and equipment to fit your car. They know their stuff.

Are factory CD players from the 95-99 Subes the same fit? I have seen quite a few factory CD players on eBay for pretty cheap. Lots of folks pull the factory model out to put in a more oomphed after market unit. If they fit, that would be a good, cheap route--it would plug right up w/o anything else to buy. Check the feedback on the seller and ask if he'll guarantee it not to show up dead. I bought a new in-the-box 6 CD factory changer for my 95 wagon for $11 off eBay and it has worked perfectly.

Hey--did Subaru have factory 8 track players in the 70s? Now that would be cool to stick in the dash of a newer Sube as a dummy radio to freak people out. (Of course the real system would be hidden elsewhere...)

Hey frag, I installed a Panasonic CQ-C1101U. It was $89.00 from Car Toys, $15 for the harness adaptor. They have more expensive models which they will install for free over $100. There's no difference in sound quality. Didn't need Mosfet or MP3. The screw holes on it are perfect in placement and size to fit into the bracket that currently holds your radio. Circut City apparently makes a harness for most cd players and and car models that plug directly with out having to do any hard wiring. 90 legacys, unfortunately are too old. Just wire nut the harness that comes with the cd player to the adaptor harness for your model (if you can't get the direct plug harness) and plug it into the harness under your dash. Presto. I also found a large size storage box to take up the space left from the smaller size cd player. You may have to buy and installation kit for that. Might be worth letting them install it in that case.

There is an adaptor harness made for most mass produced cars, not all, but most. The bolt holes are a standard on the side of any radio and will match up with the brackets in the Sube. That means that you do not need to buy a Panasonic for this to work, you can buy any brand you want. And, in my less then humble opinion :) , there is a huge difference in sound quality between stereos. Also, there is a huge difference in ergonomics. Go to a local shop and play with them, find one that suits your ear as well as your finger tips. They are very simple to install and can be done with simple tools...including the attachment of the wire harnes to the radio which can be done at your dining room table in less then 10 minutes.

Good to know about the holes being standard. For the money, and I played with quite a few, the Panasonic sounded the best to me in the under $150 price range. New Infinity speakers made a huge difference. The ergonomics seem easy although the blue background light is a little too bright at night.

As for the Question, I would attempt to retrieve the tape with some Butter Knives or hemostats sp? Anyways, also think about what you make an hour. becasue it might not be worth your time. I replaced my Deck in my 90 legacy and then sold the stock deck for 1 dollar on Ebay. The guy had to pay 11 bucks for shipping but it worked great. So if you can't get it fixed then I would not hesitate replacing it.

Can't remember the user who sugggested it but Crutchfield is the absolute best for you to buy a new deck from, simply because they will supply the oversize Storage case and wiring harness for free. Not that asked where to buy a Stereo. The only reason I mention Crutchfield is becasue they have the best online Database for verifying that any given audio product will fit. They offer Lifetime Tech Support. They also handle sales for Sony Direct Car Stereo's. But to mention I know you have a Legacy, and there are no known problems I can think off. But I think some Folks might assume that all Decks are the same and if they fit then they fit.

But I had a GL that I coudnt fit a Kenwood Deck into- meaning that Crutchfields Site said it would not fit. I installed it anyways, becasue it seemed to fit just fine. Well sure enough a few months later the Amp in the Deck fried. This was because the heat sink was pressed directly against the Subaru Heater Duct and the heat was uanble to dissipate. Thus frying the Amp. The point I am trying to make is that even if you dont want to buy a Deck from Crutchfield at least use there online resource to find a Deck that will fit. This is a moot point for you if you go over to CD, becasue I already know that all Modern CD Decks fit in the Legacy.

I might just go with an Ipod or a Discman and the Aux in on your Deck.

Unfortunately, the '93 does not have the Aux port in the front. That ended with '91. I have it in my '92 because I put a '91 radio in there with the factory CD player (works great, and looks factory original, except that I have a port that that year did not have)

Okay, I see, I jsut bought a 94 but have not seen it yet. Aggghhhhhh But anyways, that's cool. I personally wouldn't do it, but a few of my friends have put in those RF Controlled Disk Changers. They are cheap and easy. They just run of your radio signal. That is of course if you can get the radio to work with the tape being stuck. I also once got a stuck tape out and put in a Tape with the Stereo Mini cord used for Discmans. Good luck again. Would a 94 Stereo fit into your Car? I might get rid of the stock one from mine once I get the car. But I was told mine had a CD/Tape. Let me know. Thanks, gabe
