I've been thinking its just the typical non subaru brake pad squealing I keep hearing about but now Im curious to know if there's a diff between that squealing and what a shot rotor sounds like. When I pulled the wheels to check out the brakes initally it did look like the rotors were slightly rusting, but nothing major, definately seen much worse. Recently I was trying to find out where this mystery leak was coming from and I pulled the front pass tire off since it was next to the leak and I remember looking at the rim of the rotor in particular and it was fairly rusty. I cant tell if the brakes in the car are non subie or not, the rotor thing came up cuz I know the guy who owned the car previously mantained it religiously only no actual receipts to show where it was done (might've been by the dealership he owned) and it sounds like the squealing is only coming from the front. The wear on the rotors are even btw, so is there any way to tell if they are for sure shot? I know these are expensive... Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Scottbaru Posted March 27, 2005 Share Posted March 27, 2005 I noticed my rotors get rusty faster than any I've seen, and I'm pretty sure they're original. teppichkopf Posted March 27, 2005 Share Posted March 27, 2005 My front brakes squeak often on my '90 Legacy. Is the wear on the pads even? My front inside pads wear much quicker than the outside pads. I believe the cause is a sticky lock pin or caliper guide pin. This in turn causes the inner pad to stick and squeak. At least this is my theory. In the next week or so I will pull it all apart and rebuild with hi-temp grease. And hope the squeak is gone. I have seen cars breaks begin to rust within a few hours on a rainy day. After a couple of hard stops, that rust will be gone. What you need to look out for is a horizontal shake in the entire car when braking (warped rotors), or not being able to stop (worn out pads).
