92' Loyale..
About a week ago I replaced the vaccuum modulator which was bad, no big deal..At the same time I also replaced the governor assembly, the gear was chewed up(apple cored),with one from my old 89 DL'..It was in perfect shape when I put it in!!

Guess what, today it chewed up that perfectly good replacement governor also!!.Once again I had to drive about 30 miles back home at 30 MPH with the shifter pulled down to second gear (won't shift out of first gear automatically when in drive)..
What the hell is going on??.Only thing I can come up with is that the gear which the governor gear meshes with inside the tranny must have it's teeth chewed up also & that's what caused it to ruin the replacement governor..

Has anyone had to open the tranny & replace the internal gear & did it involve some big $$$.??.Of course now the tranny is full of metal shavings also..I'm really not sure now whether to have it fixed or just get a new tranny.I feel like i'm kicking a beehive here!!.This little problem has become a MAJOR nuisance!!

I have the same problem with my 84 Turbo coupe with 3AT. Its gone thru 3 govs. I know its internal, and I will be replacing it with a 5spd D/R. It not worth the hassle of tearing into the tranny to replace the gear. If you want to replace it with the same tranny, I'm sure a 3AT would be easy to find in a yard.

Yeah - the yards have lots of em, since no one wants them. hehe. One thing - if you replace the tranny, replace the torque converter too - with a new or rebuilt one. You don't want all the metal shavings from the old tranny to get into the new one.

Well the problem is, here in the midwest (southern illinois) theres not very many subarus runnin' around so the same goes for the salvage yards.Plus I kind of hate to put a salvage tranny in it that I don't know anything about, I might end up installing another piece of junk.I figure it may cost as much to repair it as to replace it with a rebuilt one.

Guess an additional question would be, anyone know about how much a rebuilt one costs??

I have a split up tranny that shows the gear inside. I'll take a look at it tomorrow and see what needs to be down to break one down. Remind me if I dont reply in a day or 2.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

Thanks Turbone!!.In the meanwhile, i'm gonna go to our local import repair shop (the only one within, i'd say, 75 miles) & see what kind of prices i'm looking at..

If you are looking at going with the rebuilt route, You might look around on the board here for Emily at CCR.. They might to trans rebuilds.. I have heard great things about their engines!
