96 2.5gt legacy CEL egr, low gas milage, slow to start

Recommended Posts

I have a 1996 subaru legacy gt with 144000 miles on it. Ive had it a little over a month and the check engine light came on not soon after i had it. When autozone ran the diagnostics on it, it came up as the EGR valve. A friend and I took the EGR valve off to make sure that the diaphragm thing was still moving and we cleaned off the carbon deposits around the need thing but it appeared to be ok. We slapped it back on but the same problem persists. The car also only gets 16-17 mpg even on the highway at normal speeds. This is pretty bad in my opinion. The car will also take a little while to crank over and start up, it almost seems like its starving for fuel. I just did a tuneup (pcv, fuel filter, spark plugs and oil) but the check engine light is still on and i cant figure out what the problem is.

I'm currently having the same issue with my g/f's 2.5 Outback. After we cleaned the EGR valve the CEL went away for a bit after we reset the ECU, but comes back intermittently. Same starting symptoms. Anyone got info on this? I'm new to the Subie family of cars and searched for this but couldn't come up with anything pertinent.

Did you try changing the spark plugs wires? I had a #4 wire that the insulation weakened and was grounding out.....

Oh, and after any maintanence work you should disconnect the battery (if you dont do it WHILE you're working on the car..) to reset the ECU.
