found location of vehicle speed sensor, 99 legacy

Recommended Posts

just got off the phone with parts guy at dealer, just to inform all that on the 99 legacy with 2.2L he says the vss is in the dash cluster. i wouls asume that the wire from tranny sends a pulse and the sensor decphers it and then the speedo goes.

hopefully this is where the error code comes from on MY car. i will repair and report back with an update.

also, i did alittle electronic fooling around , i took out the instrument cluster, hooked up my voltmeter, with the positive probe connected to the wire from the tranny that plugs into the speedo.

while sitting still it showed no voltage, but as i accelerated, the voltage pulsated until i reached @ 10 mph, then it stayed at 2 or 2 - 1/2 volts DC.

i am assuming that the magnet and the wheel in the tranny are doing their job.

i am gonna get another cluster and keep all informed about the results

it looks to me that the error code must be recognizing the problem between the speedo and the computer.

hey, if anyone has contadicting info, PLEASE chime in before i and others spend money foolishly on parts.

one other thing, i toook my dash cluster out again today, removed the speedo assy, checked for any bad solders, visible cracks in the circuit board, put it back in and what do ya know, THE DAMN thing works. only drove a couple of miles, i'm gonna keep an eye on this and keep all those who speedo's have failed updated.
