'93 Legacy acceleration problems and '05 advice.

Recommended Posts

I have a '93 subaru legacy wagon, standard transmission. i love this car, but she's been having some issues lately and i would love some advice on them (i hate to say it, but i really don't trust mechanics)

- the car has a really hard time starting when she's been sitting for more than 2 hours, i have to turn the starter for 3 minutes or so. the problem started only on cold days, but now is anytime. the subbie dealership said it was a starter problem and replaced the starter, but the problem didn't improv. i had a tune-up done, with the belts replaced and the problem still exists.

- she has recently been really slow about accelerating. the problem is worse when starting from a stop, but is bad between gears at all times. the RPMs rev way up, but the car just doesn't go.

- she is having a really hard time going up hills (not good, considering i live in the foothills of the rocky mtns).

- when i am on the highway and need to slow quickly, i can't always downshift from 5th to 4th, it just grinds and won't go.

- when driving, i can hear a deep "clicking" noise reverbing off cement pile-ons, i thought this might be due to low oil, but i the oil is full.

i love this car and would really like to get her working well, if anyone can offer any advice, i would love it.

also, i am looking at buying a 2nd car, and i want either a '05 forester or a '05 outback (i'm not even LOOKING at anything that's not a subaru!!!) and i just wanted to know which one has the most cargo space (i have Siberian Huskies and need to have a car i can tote them in), the best safety rating, the best acceleration, and just general comments from owners.

thanks!!! :)

Have you checked to see if there are any codes stored in the ECU? You can find instructions on how to pull the codes from my site.

As for the starting issue, it's probably the coolant temp sensor. It's a $20 sensor at www.1stsubaru.com or www.subaruparts.com so I would suggest starting there.

It may also fix your power issue.

As for the grinding in the transmission. Is there any slop in the shifter linkage? Have you changed the fluid recently? It's probably the syncro, if that's the case, there's probably not much you can do unless you rebuild the engine.

I checked all the fluids today and they were fine (as were the belts, etc). But I went out to the store and the acceleration was terrible, then the car just died. Would turn on and rev, but not go anywhere. It's definately the clutch (blugh) - I'll have to get it replaced. The guys at the shop are looking at the coolant temp sensor while it's there since they've seen starter problems be coolant related before.

Hopefully the new clutch will fix it all (ha ha). It's putting me out $850... so it'd better!

Thanks for all the help!
