EJ into EA81

Recommended Posts

So guys, whats the deal with this swap? I've heard a lot of talk on this subject but no difinitive answers! (Maybe i just missed them though!) Heres what I've heard so far:

1. To fit it you must have a 6" lift

2. Requires cutting of chassis

3. It can be done with out cutting or lift.

Who knows for sure?

Freak, most of the item you mentioned were reasons why not to install an EA82 into an EA81 series car, the EJ series engine is narrower then the EA82 so no cutting is necessary. But Like Shawn stated, the engine is a little longer. But bolting up the EJ into an EA81 series car is not the MAJOR problem, that is getting it wired correctly so that it will run. Also since it is a fuel injected engine, it will need a different, high pressure fuel pump. If you are really serious about doing this, let me know, I do have experience with this type of a conversion.

I was told that I couldn't have the EA-82 engine in my '82 BRAT, cause it wouldn't fit between the frame rails, with-out a lift or cutting the rails. It does fit, tightly, but it fits. If the EJ engines are narrower side-to-side, you'll have enough room there. The engine in my BRAT originaly had the water pump mounted fan, and it sat about a 1/4" or less from the radiator. I promptly removed that. Not sure how much longer front-to-rear the EJ is from the EA-82, but I have 2-3/8" between the studs on the water pump and the radiator, a 2-core EA-82 type. So you may have to relocate the radiator. As far as the FI stuff, you could go with the CIS conversion like Noah did on his Wagon. Looks to be an easy conversion, for the do-it-myselfer. There's even one for the 5 cylinder engines, which has the fitting capped-off for the 6th cylinders injector. Just some more info here is all.............

In UltimateRX, there was no room for a fan larger the 2 inches thick, so I mounted some pusher fans were the A/C condensor used to be. On last check, UltimateRX was still not in top running shape, and too many other project, so it will wait awhile. The fans worked well enough for the times I had the engine running.
