Do I need new 98 Outback head bolts

Recommended Posts

I just picked up my heads having been resurfaced at a machine shop. The guy said I should replace all the head bolts with new "torque to yield" bolts. Has anyone else had this recommendation??

My current bolts look good and weren't difficult to remove. The 2.5 L would need 12 bolts in all at about $12.50 ea. I hate to part with the money if it's not really necessary.

Thanks,

Dave

I posted this question back in Feb. Some said yes, some said no. The factory manual said no per the sevice manager at the dealer. If our engines go te hell we can both blame ShawnW! :-) (just kidding ShawnW)

I'll back up Shawn on this one. They can be reused once. A common practice is to mark the bolts with a bit of paint to let the next person in there know that they have been re-torqued. If they are marked with paint don't reuse them.
