help needed now! clutch related

Recommended Posts

well Hondasucks is in Utah so he's letting me pimp around the turbowagon. Well I was driving it home from his house after working on the ole beer wagon and the clutch gradually started to not disengage. It got so bad that I had to adjust it before I got home cause it would NOT shift into gear unless I forced it or ground it, YIKES! I need to know why this is probably happening. The other thing is that the clutch pedal doesn't want to return to where its suppoesed to be, meaning it stays on the floor. I need to fix it before he gets back in a week!!! Any suggestions on something I could try?

he has an RX tranny he's going to put into it. If something is wrong with like the clutch and it has to be replaced, I'm probably gonna put the RX tranny in. Does anyone have any suggestions on why this is happening? I want to get some idea of what could be wrong before I got into it. I need to get it doen bafore he comes home or else he's gonna do this to me:dead:

On my 80 wagon i had something similar happen. except mine wasn't gradual, it happend real quick. The clutch cable pulled apart right near the clutch pedal. The fat outer rubber covering of the clutch cable that is strapped down on the pedal assembly pulled apart, and wouldn't hold the outer covering of the clutch cable from moving around, hence no clutch, no return on the pedal. I think my cable costed me like 30 bucks from napa (nice quality cable, i was impressed). It only took about an hour to change out as well. If i were you, i would check that first. good luck.

that sounds like it could be the problem. The clutch seemed really weird when he traded Edrach his Legacy for it. The clutch had so much freeplay in it and it didn't disengage until right next to the floor. It was kinda gradual but it happened in about 20 miles of driving or so (from his house to mine). I'll see if I can get one from a wrecking yard or from a part store and hopefully have it in before he gets home:banana:

See what I get? I go to Utah for 6 days and you guys break my car :madder: :madder: :madder: but oh well, you get to fix it :-)

On a good note, I saw a EA82 Turbowagon on 6200 south in Salt Lake, had a messed up door, but looked good other than that. And last time I was here back in March, I saw a camoflage EA81 hatchback in the Jordan's Landing shopping center, next to Wal Mart... I dunno who's it was, but they took off before I could evangelize teh board :-P Oh well, they should have it fixed by the time I get back... which will be soon cuz I've had about enough Mormonism to last me for the rest of the year :-P

well I replaced the clutch cable with the help of JonOfScio but still nothing. The pedal depresses but will not come back up like it is being held down from something. Then you have to use your hand to bring it up and it goes back into place where its supposed to be. I think the pressure plate might be fried but I hope not. Also, I got the cable off of an 88 sedan 2wd 5speed and its exactly the same but the pedal setup on the sedan was different than the wagon. In the wagon, there's this big spring that is connected to the pedal in a weird fashion and I guess its to help with the return? But the odd thing is, the sedan in the JY didn't have that spring. What do I do now?

my cable broke the fat metal nougat that held it in place relative to the pedal box. it broke halfway to jim's in ohio. i had a clamp in the back of the car that i used to clamp the cablee still(sorta like a lanmowe throttle able)

it made i all the way out to the subaru show!

The pedal should be pulled up by the pressure plate. Did you adjust the 'new' cable correctly? Did you compare the length of the new with the old cable? Now the old cable is removed, does it look bad?

It must be possible to pull the pedal in his upper position by pulling the end of the cable where it's connected to the fork under the hood. The free play you became now on the cable must be reduced by the adjusting nut untill the pedal still in the right position. If the clutch (disc and plate) are OK it should work now.

If they are the cause it will be impossible to press the pedal down unless you brake the cable.

So here's the situation.

Both cables are the same length. The one from the car that is bad, doesn't move very much, and is really hard to move by hand. The one that went into the car feels like it's brand new, and looks like it's in great condition to boot.

If say, the springs whatever weren't on right, and you pulled the clutch forward or pushed it back, at least it would move like it's supposed to... right? Well, it won't change gears if the car is on, if the pedal is pressed... so it's likely it's NOT a spring or something. We got it in there the same way it was installed before.

The donor car did not have the spring setup, but the turbowag had an extra bracket, looks factory enough.

this thing was a bitch to work on. Upside down in the foot compartment of the car, with a halogen spotlight frying your rump roast behind you in the car... in hot weather.... and your hands hurt... and things were frustrating.

But I eventually got the pedal on right. Russ did most the work, but when it came to the part where you put the screws throught he clutch cable and into the car's bracket to hold it in place, I had to do it... and it sucked.

I sure hope if he goes with putting the RX tranny in, he goes for a centriforce clutch kit. yeah... that's what I'll do when I get my credit card, it'll be my ONLY purchase until I have it payed off. I'll pay a little at a time to start getting credit, ya know...?

well I'm gonna go up and get the 30.06 out and have shooting contest on Andrew's car:brow: well maybe not. Anyone else have any ideas? Any part of the clutch assembly I could check without pulling the tranny or the motor out? The fork boot is torn so I might be able to get my pen light in there and see if the pressure plate isn't broke. If it is.....time for an XT6 clutch with the RX tranny:headbang:

It sounds like one of a couple of problems could be the culprit. Check the hill holder as per Andy's suggestion. If that checks out then it sounds like the throw out bearing is sticking/stuck to the sleeve or the pressure plate is bad. My guess would be "HH" or throw out bearing.

Also, disconnect the clutch cable from the tranny and see if it still does as you describe. That will tell you if it is in the tranny or in the pedal.

I think it's either a worn/broken pressure plate, but if you're lucky the T.O. is just stuck.

Not likely though.

When the T.O. gets stuck you usually can't engage because it goes too far and gets stuck on the input shaft.

Maybe the T.O. arm is bent because of excessive use on a worn clutch. Those are steel though, so again not likely.

Good luck.

Let us know what happens.

well I've adjusted it again and again both the clutch cable and the HH. Still nothing! I'm guessing that the pressure plate is bad cause of the amount of play in the fork and just the way the fork feels. I could possibly be a sticking T.O. but I don't think thats the cause. %^@$@! clutch!!!! As for it popping a spring, I don't think that would be the case cause it would still shift sorta. It won't even go into gear while the engine is idle and the car is stopped.

Inside the clutch housing, about halfway the fork lenght she is supported (as you know, the fork is a lever). Maybe she is worn out there. If you can look trough the rubber boot you should pay attention to that point to. It happens that the head of the supporting bolt go's trough the fork there or that the fork is plied.
