Removing XT radio?

Recommended Posts

How in the holy hell do you get the radio out of an XT? I can't find a single screw or clip anywhere. I managed to get the left side of the big panel with the vents in it started, but that's about it. I ended up cracking the panel a little bit and then called it quits.

From what I can see the center dash panel has to come off to get the radio out, but the radio has to come out to get that panel off. How in the world do you get this thing apart?? :banghead:

There aren't any special tools or secret majic chants or anything.

I have a tape deck above the radio. They're screwed into the same brackets. Can't see any method of getting to the screws that hold it into the dash. Any other tips?

Take the trim off the clock, etc, and try grabbing the radio/tape deck ... then pull straight out. I don't recall there being anything holding them in other than gravity and a snug fit. If I recall correctly when I took mine out initially ... I was cursing and swearing :temper: ... then it suddenly popped out.

On both of my XT's (85 and 86) there is a little square cover next to the trip computer. Pop it off, and you'll find a screw. Take that out, and the computer comes out. Looking in there, you can now see the 2 screws that hold the radio/tape player into the dash. The screws are verticle, so you'll probably need one of those right angle screw drivers...at least I did.
