dave+Sub=trouble Posted September 6, 2003 Share Posted September 6, 2003 Got a 1984 GL 4x4 Wagon Auto tranny. Has been running great up to now. Engine runs fine plenty of power in the engine, but my acceleration has dramatically dropped off. It is like there is half the acceleration there was. Replaced Spark plugs wire cap rotor and ignition coil about 5k miles ago, so I don't think it is the Engine. Could it be tranny issues? Anyone ever have this problem? I replace mine about every 6 months, because I drive it so much (about 15,000 miles in 6 months), even though I shouldn't need to, it's not a bad idea. They're only a couple bucks each. If there's a bogging sort of feeling, something like hesitation, it's probably fuel filters. Make sure your oil in your engine, and tranny is good... check your emissions hoses on your valve covers to see if they're clogged, check all other hoses, PCV valve and hose especially, air filter, and don't forget to check all of your vacuum lines. If you open the hood and there's a slight hiss sound (can be heard if the hood is open, from inside the engine compartment if the car is running) then you might look for a vacuum hose loose or off. Sometimes they fly off for no apparent reason. (they get old and don't grip as well) If you need me to, I can send you a picture or two of my engine compartment and I can draw in the picture to show you where everything is if you're not too familiar with your engine's parts. It seems to be in the top end where I loose power. I also am getting some really bad valve pinging when I try and go up a hill. Sounds a bunch of marbles in the engine banging around. I wouldn't think the valves should need adjusting as this just all started happenening suddenly. Dunno. So I am gonna replace all the spark plugs, caps rotor again and filters. One of the 1st things I learned about Subarus is how weird they act when the filters get even a little dirty. I think your '84 has two, one under the car at the fuel pump and one under the hood at the brake master cylinder. The one under the hood is called a water vapor separator, but looks and acts like a filter. Vacuum leaks could also be the culprit. I highly recommend the Accel SuperStock coil and gapping the plugs to at least .045 or .050. Only NGK plugs will do. I sat there and scratched my head. Then LO I beheld my cause of much anguish..... One tiny little vacuum home came loose.... How something so small can cause such great problems!! GGGRRRR!!
