Hello all, new to the board. I've been the owner of a beautiful 2002 Impreza RS for about 4 months now, and its time to upgrade the stereo. The guy at circuit city said I didn't need a mounting kit, that my deck should fit (It is a Pioneer Premier w/ removable face.)

I've done plenty of stereo installs before, and the wiring should be no problem. My only question is where do I start to take apart the dash around the stereo? Are there a few simple screws to undo, or do I have to take off the entire dash?

Thanks!

That is a great thread.. . .if he was looking for wiring info (I found it useful, but my needs are not his) He was looking for something along the lines of (this info for a 90-94 Legacy) "there are two screws at the front of the rails that hold the ashtray, and two in the recess where the cupholder resides (ashtray and cupholder need to be removed). From there there are six screws (three on each side, two of which are easily seen, and one recessed one between them) that need to be removed, and then you can pull the radio unit out easily for replacement, or whatnot." I do not have similar information for the RS, or I would give it. I can however, venture to guess that there are a few screws to remove that will make this operation a lot easier. Sorry that I could not be of more help, and thanks SVXdc for the valuable wiring info.

luca_brasi:

Try this: http://www.scoobymod...read.php?t=4213
Or this: http://forums.nasioc...ad.php?t=518787

It's in the thread that SVXdc already posted. There's a lot of good info there, and it's not limited to wiring only, but some of it is in the form of links to other sites.

IMO if you're upgrading the deck, you'll definitely want decent speakers. For front speakers, this might be helpful:

If you aren't registered at scoobymods... you should be ;)
You can view the info here if you're not:

The stock speakers are pretty poor... upgrading them is a big improvement in sound quality.

Guess which one is the stock speaker?

Thanks for the tips! It looks like i just have to take off the cupholder and its pretty simple from there! I'm glad I don't have to take the whole dash off (I did on a Camaro)

I'll be getting new speakers eventually. Roof rack is the next purchase, though. And then a bike to put on it.

For my wife's birthday I got her a new HU for the TS... a Pioneer DEH-P3700MP. And I just put that in this morning; it took about 30 minutes, and that was with me taking my time. It was very easy... the instructions in the link above were spot on. Seems to be a big improvement over the stock one, plus it plays MP3's. Hope she likes it... it's a surprise ;) and she's out of town.

The only thing I'd ad is: Get *two* wiring harnesses from the store... a Subaru to Universal one (around $16) and a Universal to X (the brand of HU you buy... mine was $6). Best six dollars I've ever spent. No soldering or wiring... it just plugs straight in, everything seems to work perfectly. Brilliant.

Steve

EDIT: OK, thought of two other things: You don't need the plastic trim piece that goes around the face (at least I haven't on the two Pioneers I've installed in Subies) and you don't need the metal "sleeve" that slides over the HU. Looks good in the dash, too.

anyone know anything about the subaru OEM upgraded speakers? i'm considering buying them plus the tweeter kit for my outback sport (i assume the tweeters go near the armrest since it looks like there's supposed to be speakers there).

any recommendations for decent inexpensive after-market upgraded speakers or stereo (the factory cd player doesn't seem to play CD-R's in mine).

Rizzo:

Consensus on NASIOC (where most of the above links go and where they have a dedicated audio / electonic forum) is that the upgraded ones aren't that impressive. For the cost you're better off with aftermarket, IMO.

The setup I've detailed above (Infinity 6.5's in the front, stock in the back, and Pioneer deck) sound great to me. Maybe $250 for the whole deal, installed pretty easily by me.

Steve
