**After Market Warranty...experiences

Recommended Posts

Well Since I'm not the original owner and the MFG warranty period was up...i negotiated the warranty and choose it...especially with the head gasget issue...i figured it may be a good idea. What do you all think about aftermkt warranties? Any good stories or horror stories...anything I (we) should be on the look out for or in "the Know" about implementing the warranty, when/if it's ever needed. This may even be a good sticky as i'm sure there are many 2nd/not original owners out there!! Thanks everyone for taking the time to address this!!

60 minutes did something on that awhile ago, or maybe it was one of the "other" newsmagazines. In any event, read the document, you are purchasing an insurance policy, not really a warranty. If it is issued by a company you never heard of, it may well be not worth the paper it is printed on. Will the dealership state in writing that if the "insurance" company goes out of business, they will still honor the warranty? Most places will not. What has happened is people have gotten warranty work done, and the dealer finds the bill will not be covered by the warranty. They can keep the car via mechanics lien until the bill is paid by you. This has happened and quite often.

We purchased a warranty many years ago on a used AMC Eagle, 3 months later the transmission went. Had fits getting them to cover it, they wanted the dealer to cover it. Had several other small "covered" items go bad, and for the most part it was always 20 questions on weather the part can be rebuilt, or repaired..........instead of replaced. Then after the deductible, sometimes it only would cover a small portion of the repair.

I did have a friend who bought one on a used Dodge Stealth with an automatic transmission. The warranty rebuilt the transmission 3 times. Dealer told them the transmissions in those were not worth rebuilding because they wouldn't last. Get a factory replacement for $500 more than the rebuild. They would not go for the rebuild, but paid close to 2 grand each time to rebuild the transmission. My friend dumped the car after the 3rd rebuild.........so sometimes they can work out..........read carefully!

especially with the head gasget issue...

If the head gasket is the primary reason for getting the warrenty, then you better read the warrenty carefully. Some warrenties wont cover head gaskets because they are considered "wear items."

otherwise it's a personal choice whether to get a warrenty. we got one on our last subaru- we paid $1100 and got $300 worth of benefits. We didn't get one on our 00 forester we bought used as a result.

I've always been 50/50 on aftermarket warranties. Fortunately this one will indeed cover the head gasket issue, should it arise. I researched the company and they are very reputable, however being reputable and actually trying to get the "warranty work" done are two very different things...I feel with these it's kind of damned a bit if you do and your a bit damned if you don't. Either way, maybe it helps me sleep better at night or not sweat longer trips...who knows. I do know really enjoy the car, more than i thought i ever would!

We got an extended warranty when we bought a 93 minivan years back. . .

right front steering knuckle failed, causing an accident. the warranty people said the accident was the cause of the failure. . . cost us tuice as much to get it fixed (differences in deductable) and they had fought with us on every other issue to arrise in the car. Just before the warranty expired, the tranny went out, so we took it to a shop to see how much it would be. Shop fought for us, and we got a new tranny out of the deal. That paid for the cost of the warranty, but was also the only good thing that happened from it. Now I just buy cars I can work on myself:Subarus.

It's been proven that they are for the most part a gimmick that the dealers make a bundle on. Most people get about the same benefits as bjwirth did, if that much. Look the dealer in the eye and ask him why you need a warranty, won't he stand behind his product? If he won't give you some kind of satisfactory warranty (in writing) on his own, use your "two foot" option and leave.

well for me what's done is done...i usually don't buy into these things but did...such is life. I actually mentioned it to my little brother, who then went on to tell me that he actually got quite a bit out of his. I guess it's case by case, luck by luck basis...?

thx
