ajosefick
Hello everyone, I am about to change the fuel filter on my 1999 Forester EJ25 Automatic. I have moderate experience with DIY repair on other cars I have owned but I am not familiar with the Subaru. Is there anything special I need to do when I change the fuel filter? Do I need to remove the fuel pressure from the supply line and if so, how do I go about doing that? Thank you for any responses, A.J. frag
The easiest way of relieving the fuel system pressure is shutting down the engine and waiting three hours. Ample time to let the system pressure dissipate. I have a fuel pressure gauge, so I know. Three hours is even too much time, but better be safe than sorry. Even then put a rag around/under the connection when unfastening cause a little fuel will spill anyway. Good luck.

BigMattyD
I have changed my fuel filter a few times. The first time I went tio the trouble of depressurizing the fuel system, and everything went well. The next time, I didn't depressurize the fuel system, and everything went well. As Frag said, it only takes a short while for the system to bleed off pressure on its own. If you leave it sit for an hr or two, it will be fine. Even if gasoline were to spray around, as long as there is no source of ignition you will be fine, it evaporates quickly, esp. if outdoors. Remember when you used to overfill the lawnmower when you were a kid? Fuel will come out of the hoses and filter no matter what, so use a rag or small cup to catch it if you want.
