Doing timing belt... should I replace water pump?

Recommended Posts

How long's a Subaru water pump good for?

The engine in question is my '96 EJ22 with 127k miles on it. So, will the water pump make it to 187kmi? Actually, I was thinking about installing a California-spec timing belt, so the next belt replacement would be around 222kmi, a.k.a. never.

Is there a way to inspect the water and oil pumps to see how much life they have left?

My experience so far has been that you should expect 50-75k mi from a water pump. AFA oil pumps go my original pump in my L went Tango-Uniform at 60K mi. The current one has been good ever since; no leaks when I replaced the timing belt at 120k (when I replaced the water pump as preventitive maintenance).

As an insurance policy it may be worthwhile replacing them while you have the engine face open already. New water pumps can be had for $70 and oil pumps for $130. That seems cheap versus getting stuck Bog-knows-where with a seized engine.

Water pump can be trusted for two timing belts. So I would elect to replace it at your mileage.

Oil pump is strong enough to keep running. But as Subiegal pointed out, the seals between it and the engine block would be good to replace.
