Replacement parts / accident repair

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

97 Legacy sedan 5 speed 2.2

The wife’s daily driver has some minor accident damage and is in need of some replacement parts, I figured while we are at it I might as well see if we can update/ upgrade it a little and had a few questions.

  • The hood needs replaced, in my searches I have found a used 98 legacy GT hood for the same price as the that the standard Legacy hood. From what I have read here it appears that it will bolt up without issue. Is this correct? Are there any different models of hoods that I should look into?
  • Both headlights need replaced because the plastic mounts are busted, since I am looking at replacing both sides is there a better option than the one-piece factory units? (Different model/ year or aftermarket)
  • The grill needs replaced as well and I have noticed that there were several different grills available normal/ GT /outback. Will they all fit? Are there any aftermarket grills that I should consider?

Anything else I should consider while I am replacing/painting?

Thanks!

You should be good to go with that hood. I replaced the hood on my 95 Legacy last year and wish I'd have gone ahead and got an Outback hood to add a little sportiness. Oh well. I bought an aftermarket hood--Taiwan one, but forgot the name of who made it. It came in black primer, stiff and straight, and cheap as all get out compared to what OEM or salvage yards wanted.

I also got my grille aftermarket from the same shop I got my hood (and fender). It is all charcoal black--no chrome on it--and of course no emblem. Still, it was dirt cheap compared to OEM and it came with all the clips. Had I got the grille from the dealer I'd have paid twice as much and still had to pay even more for the mounting clips. If you got the cash and want the chromed grille, go factory though. I would assume any Legacy grille would fit, but it wouldn't hurt to check with the dealer to see pics. I know the OBW had a different inner bumper than the Legacy.

Headlights--spring the cash and get the name stuff. That's what I've heard. Some people may not have an issue with it, but I've heard some complain about the less expensive non-OEM headlights.

What are you planning to do with the old headlights? If you're just gonna toss them, let me know.

Here's a link to a pic of my 95. I haven't gotten around to getting a new emblem for this grille yet. I painted my bumpers, wheel lips, and the rocker panels. The car used to be solid white. If you're doing some painting after the repair, I thought this added a sporty flare to mine.

Thanks for the replies, I picked up the hood today and it fit just fine after I got everything back to the stock location. The only adjustment I had to make was to the front radiator mount because it was knocked out of whack about 1/2".

Now if I could just find a decent priced set of headlights and front grill :(

Not sure yet, i may try and fix one of them but if not I will let you know before I toss them.

"How much did you find that GT hood for? I need one for my 98 GT "

I Purchased it for $200 at a local salvage yard that was parting out a 98 outback. It was more than I wanted to pay but I figured since it was local I would pay the extra for a fancy hood :) I also purchased a GT rear spoiler off Ebay since I am going to have to paint anyways.

Anyone have a lead on a set of decent priced headlights for this 97 Legacy?

Rockauto.com has them for approx 130-150 PER assembly.. I would not recommend these assemblies as they are not oem and dont take "debree" hitting them very well at all.. I also don't like them (rock) very much due to some problems I had with them about a brat exhaust.... but their newer stuff isnt so bad... just cheap.

Dave

There is an after market place in Arlington, Texas called Certifit.

I recently purchased an after market hood for my 97 Legacy and it fit perfect, for $121. I also purchased a headlight for $100 and it fit perfect, looked like OEM. The manager there is Jason and the phone number is 817 468 1400. They provide a lifetime warranty on all parts, except if you wreck it again.

Thank You
