Question about new suspension springs

I have just replaced all springs and shocks/struts on my 85 L-Series. With the new springs the vehicle is sitting much higher than before, probably too high and I think the front driveshafts aren't real happy with the extra deflection they have to cope with. (Vibration noticeable on acceleration). Having never replaced springs on any vehicle before I'm interested to know if new springs tend to start out a fair bit higher and then settle to the correct ride height reasonably quickly? Should I give it a couple of thousand miles and re-evaluate the situation and then worry if things haven't dropped a bit? I would need to see about a three-quarter to one inch drop to be entirely happy that driveshafts etc weren't getting strained , is this likely?

Yes, the springs will take a "set" as they call it. Can't say how long it will take, though. Really will depend on the amount of driving done, and amount of flexing the springs do. Posibility that your axle is/was starting to go bad before the swap, as to why you're noticing the vibration now. There is enough movement room built into the DOJ, (inner joint), to allow for full extension/compression of the suspension system. An extra inch of ride height, shouldn't be a problem there. The DOJ will vibrate, or growl, when it goes bad. Could be either under accelleration, or decelleration. Hope this helps.......Tom

Thanks for the info. Was trying to find some info on the net about new spring "sag", but there wasn't much about it. Only a few comments in passing. I think you're probably right about the DOJ's Now that the car is smoother and quieter with the new suspension it's probably highlighted the noisy DOJ. It is exactly as you describe sort of a growl most noticeable while going up hills at about 2000rpm in 4th gear. In the meantime my 2 inch lift kit now looks like a 3 inch lift. Will have to make the most of it until the springs set. :)
