Subaru 3 speed auto, anybody rebuilt one?

Has anyone on here rebuilt/repaired a 3 speed automatic transmission? I have a '92 Loyale that the transmission was vandalized (Someone put gravel in it, don't ask me how it happened, it p*sses me off way too much!) and I'm thinking about trying to repair this one. The challenge might be interesting and it could save me a few bucks. Plus, this area was flooded really bad last week, and I have this fear of buying a tranny from a junkyard that's been underwater. I don't want to take a junk transmission out and put another junk transmission in! Thanks.

Drop your pan, and get all the gravel out of the pan, and if there is any up in the workings, pick it out, and change the tranny filter, and replace the fluid. Should work.

Rebuilding an automatic transmission, although not all that difficult, requires several special tools, and is not for teh novice. I have rebuilt a 3-speed before, it wasn't all that difficult, but I bet you could get away with replacing your filter and stuff.

OK, I dropped the pan and cleaned it, cleaned the filter, and changed the oil and it doesn't work. Mostly it slips like hell between shifts (I serviced the governor valve like posted in the USMB, that didn't help). If I take the valve body out, will that expose anything else that I might dig gravel out of? Can you see any of the clutch packs or planetary gears with it out of there? I'm wondering if gravel got into any of those parts. Can the valve body be taken apart and cleaned? I'd really like to save this tranny if I could, I've got too many other projects going on right now to get into replacing it. I'm glad I found somebody that's had one apart. Thanks a lot for your help, I appreciate it.

did you REPLACE the filter, or did you just clean it out?

If you've been driving it around with it slipping, it might need to be rebuilt, one that had water in it from the junkyard should be good if you have the thing flushed before you try to drive it, after all teh oil should keep the water from eating at the internal parts. The valve body can be taken apart and cleaned *BUT* you better be damn sure you keep track of where EACH AND EVERY little valve and check ball goes or you will be replacing the valve body!!!

It's sounding more and more like I might as well make that trip to the junkyard, it slips pretty bad. I might be further ahead in the long run. Thanks for the help.

What special tools do you need to rebuild an auto tranny? Are they something that I could make myself or are they ultra-exotic? I have access to a pretty complete machine shop, so I can be pretty creative if need be. Are there any service manuals other than a factory manual that explains how to rebuild them? Thanks again.
