EA82T to what? most easily (more power)

Hi All:

A relative newbie here, but I absolutely LOVE subie powertrains!

I have a sandrail that has a completely stock 1.8L EA82T (adapter plate and clutch to a VW bus transmission), it uses all the stock electronics connectors, etc. if I use a "front clip" or something similar my general access will allow a pretty easy and relatively inexpensive swap. My question, what would be the best swap to get more power, especially torque where I wouldn't have to get a different adapter plate and clutch, that is, are there any other subies that have the same exact bolt mounting pattern, and prefferably clutch mount. If none any sugg. on easy safe power additions to 1.8. Intake is really open, exaust completely open. I was thinking boost controller, intercooler, water injection.

Thanks much in advance

The EA82T is the most powerful of the EA series motors. TO upgrade you would have to go with an EJ series motor and that wouldn't bolt to your adapter plate.

Power mods for the EA can be as simple as an intercooler and boost controller, or as complex as a larger turbo and engine managment.

Look around the board here a bit to see what others are doing to boost the EA82T output. We have had some pretty decent successes.

if you dont go into hopping up the ea82t... im sure you have room for about 6 inches of more motor right?

subaru made an h6 with the same bolt pattern as the ea82. it came in 89-90 xt6. 2.7 litre. 150 hp.

and its na, so its ALOT of low end torque.

but an ea82t could arguable put out more power, if built proberly. but then you get the lagg.....

no replacement for displacement right? =]

they do make adaptor plates for the ej22. then you get to look at wrx stuff

FUEL! You'll need to find a way to be able to provide extra fuel and keep decent drivability. Higher flowing fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel injectors and maybe even fuel filter (I dunno). You will probably be a happy camper once you get situated with the fuel. Getting extra air in and out is the easy part.

Hey guys:

Thanks for the info!

One thing I haven't been able to figure out is what is the stock fuel pump pressure spec, and then what would you suggest as an upgrade, higher pressure, or just higher volume. Understand the injector issue. Since these have EA82T's have head gasket problems, are there any well know fixes such as high performance gaskets or o-ringing the heads (done that with a hi-per datsun and VW)? I've also heard that if I put boost pressure past 10psi the electronics will shut me down, some say that the older electronics are not that smart, thoughts?

Once again thanks much in advance, you guys are great!

Discharge Pressure: 422-490kPa (4.3-5.0kg/cm2, 61-71psi).

Discharge Flow: 95L (25.1 US gal, 20.9 Imp gal)/H min. [12 V at 299.1 kPa (3.0 kg/cm2 ,43.4psi)]
