We purchased a 1992 Legacy (not AWD) a couple of weeks ago with only 123,000 kms on it. I'm completely in love with it -- I only want Subarus from now on! I can't believe what a great car it is -- I literally don't want to let it out of my site! Even though my wife and I share one car, she's only driven it once (for 5 minutes) since we bought it -- she can't pry me out of the driver's seat! I typically do 80% of the driving anyway, but I still can't imagine anyone really driving this car but me! Luckily, she's understanding and indulges me.

I haven't seen any other 1992 Legacys on the road in the city, we've been looking lately -- that seems strange, given what a great car it is. We're in London, Ontario, Canada (about two hours from Detroit). If I ever see one, I'm going to beep and wave -- a courtesy from one Subaru driver to another.

So that's it, there's no real point to this post other than to say Subarus are the greatest cars of all time and I've never been so in love with a car...anyone else with a similar Legacy or story, feel free to add to this post or email me about it! I wasn't at all surprised to find such a massive board dedicated to the Subaru after I'd test-driven it...these cars are a true hidden gem!

Subaru Forever!

I'm not terribly far from you, in Buffalo. Here, there are loads of Subarus, but a '90-'94 Legacy is a pretty rare sight, and I think I've only seen one pre-1990 Subaru since I got my Legacy. I attribute their rarity to rust. My '96 is starting to rust in more places than I want to sand and paint.

My dad had a 1984 Subaru hatchback, which he bought new, and later sold for $500 in 1992. It was badly rusted out after eight years in salty Buffalo.

Corrosion aside, I love my car. It's easy to work on, it handles wonderfully, it's remarkably reliable.

It must be the rust. Here in BC they are surprisingly common but to be honest I never noticed them until I bought one. They don't really stand out like the Outbacks and the Foresters.

260,000 miles! That's incredible! Our mechanic says that our Legacy is going to have some exhaust problems in the near future, though. Apparently it already has an aftermarket muffler that someone has stuck on and since the entire exhaust is one piece and the flanges are weak, we're going to have to replace the whole thing at a cost of something like $1500 (Cdn). There's some large piece up at the front of the exhaust alone that costs $700 and can only be purchased through a Subaru dealer. Does that make any sense? The exhaust sounds great now but apparently the pipe is very thin and won't last much longer. I found this out before I bought the car, incidently, when I took the car to my mechanic before we finalized the sale; the seller took some money off the selling price in response.

Here's a site for you....1992 Legacy Exhaust system

Front Y pipe with front cat....$249 us

Center pipe w/cat...............$188 us

http://www.partstrain.com/products/Exhaust/1992~SUBARU~LEGACY.htm

P.S....My BEST Subaru of the 7 I've owned since a 78 DL fwd, was a 90 Legacy LS AWD. However in 1997 it was totaled....but my wife walked away with seat belt abrasions. I still say that car gave it's life for her.

On the repair side, I had over 230K miles at the time. Normal maintainence...2 water pumps...1 front axle (CV outer CV joint went bad) Best car I ever owned.

My current 04 Forester, however, looks to be in the running.

Worst Subaru...was an 02 Forester, traded back in before it's time, due to a BAD BAD case of piston slap. Many letters to Subaru to no avail. Well at 5 good cars out of 6 at the time, I'd give Subaru another shot. Glad I did. The 04 has put me back on track......Enjoy your Subaru as much as we all do.

I am from belleville Ontario. I dont know if you know where that is but its about 3 hrs east of you. I have an 92 legacy as well. I had to replace all my exhaust and it wasn't even close to $1500. I dealt with carqest. They could get all my stuff. And for the best prices. I dont know if you have one close to you but I would imagine you would. Try there and see what happens.

I sure do know where Belleville is -- I grew up in Kingston! I haven't heard of carqest -- is that a chain of repair shops? Is is Carqest or Carquest? How much did your exhaust repair cost you? Did you have to get a full muffler/exhaust pipe/converter and everything? And that funny "Y" shaped thingie at the front? Sorry to be so technical, lol.
