Axle or Wheel bearing? or both?

Hey everyone,

Recently I bought a CV axle from edrach (thanks ed!) and we got to talking.

I'm beginning to suspect that the noises issuing from the front end of my car might be more than the messed up CV axle.

I have to replace the axle anyway... Here's a pic of it

But I'm starting to suspect my wheel bearings might be bad too. Let me run over my symptoms

1. Constant humming from the front end. At higher speed it gets louder, and starts to vibrate a little bit.

2. When turning right (not left, only right) at fairly high speeds, say, a corner on a highway, There comes a loud rubbing noise. As soon as you straighten the wheel, it goes away.

3. No clicks or pops or rhythmic thumping, just a humming noise.

What do you guys think? What are the chances my wheel bearings are bad too? How much extra work would it be to put new ones in?

wassup syphon,...

i had the same thing in my 89 wagon, it was vibrating, sometimes a little sometimes a lot,..... finaly i took out the CV( it was right side), and the disc brake etc., i took apart the CV clean it, dry it, i've put in it half a can of grees,....... what i did to the baring was the "SOOB" ;) stuff= WD-40,..... put it together and drive, i've been driving like this for almost 6 months and no vibrating, no nothing,..... SO i still don't know what it was, but i thing the baring,..... good luck,.....

Maybe you're hearing noises caused by that boot flipping around in there at high speeds? Just a thought...A loose boot swinging around on an axle at speed could make any number of noises I would think. Also vibrations, etc. as it's not like it's "balanced" or anything...

Just a thought.

check and make sure your axle nut has not come loose. if it has; tighten it back up and if it comes loose again that indicates that you have a bad hub.
