ShaneFK
I just changed out the stereo head unit in my 1998 Forester and I have a question and a few comments that I would like to share. - I put the new head unit where the wacky digital compass used to be. The two screws that hold the bezel for this DIN space on were hidden by little foam disks. What is the accepted procedure for removing these disks? I destroyed them in the process and if I get my hands on new ones I would like to know how not to destroy them next time. - I read in a thread over on subaruforester.com that the factory subwoofer will not work with aftermarket radios. This is not the case in my Forester. The sub is connected to the ground, the always hot and the speaker wires for one left and one right speaker, (I forget if it was front or back). These connections are made in an extension to all the wires that connect to the head unit. It has a male plug that connects to the head unit and a female plug that connects to the wire harness that would plug into the head unit if there was no subwoofer. I just wanted to put this out there in case someone is searching for subwoofer info. - I was unhappy with the sound from my sub before I switched the head unit and planned to replace it. With my new stereo the sound is dramatically improved and I no longer feel like I need to replace it.
