Eikari Posted July 2, 2005 Share Posted July 2, 2005 Hello. I´m new here and own a Legacy ´91 2,2 with auto. There is one problem that i cant seem to fix! When i step on the brakes i hear squeal from them but if i step hard on the brakes it stops. I´ve checked all the brake pads ,they´re ok, and the brake discs are relativly new. Could it be the wheel bearing?. Another question: When i was driving couple of days ago and i´ve reached the speed of 60 miles , the steering suddenly started to vibrate excessivly. Legacy777 Posted July 5, 2005 Share Posted July 5, 2005 You can put some disc quieter stuff on the back of the brake pads. I'd say the noise you are hearing is pretty common. What happens is the pad vibrates with light pedal pressure, mostly due to them not fitting real tight. With the goop on the back of the pad, it helps absorb the noise from pads. If i step on the brakes with normal pressure they squeel. But if i step hard on the brakes the squeel stops. Could anyone show a pic of how the "Shims" look like? Setright Posted July 20, 2005 Share Posted July 20, 2005 COuld be they are just too "clean" and need a workout. Find a quiet road and brake hard a few times. Subaru X Posted July 20, 2005 Share Posted July 20, 2005 lol whenever my brakes squel like that I take a trip to the car wash. Even when I use the silicone on the back of the pads I still squek. So I just pressure wash the car and make sure to get in between the spokes of the wheels to get the brakes clean. Keeps it from squelling for about a week. Which is about how often I wash my car. FlyFlicker Posted July 20, 2005 Share Posted July 20, 2005 As SX pointed out, it could be brake dust causing this. But it is also a symptom of glazing. Repeated, light braking can gloss the rotors and pads, and this results in brake squeal. Remove the rotors and pads and "rough" them up with sand paper. If the squeal goes away - that's your problem.
