Are the stock radios on newer Subarus the same? I have a 96 OBW...it had a cassette player and an empty space below it. I'd like to get a Subaru CD/Cassette combo out of a newer car. Will they fit?

Thanks.

No! It feels like there are about 15 different sizes for 10 model years. The best approach is to get one off eBay. They're usually from folks who paid the big bucks for an aftermarket system. I've seen a few combos for your (my!) year. I'd say expect to pay around 50 bucks, if you're patient.

I was able to get a great replacement for my 92 Legacy cassette, because it was the early-year (and 90-91) model with the auxilliary input. That allowed me to plug my iPod directly into it! Great sound. Then the timing gear ate itself and I had to buy the 96.

I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to mount the 92 radio in a 96 and fill the gap at the bottom? Or just a way to plug my iPod into the aux/cd input in the back. Heck, if you've got a piece to fill it in maybe I'd send you my cassette and the storage tray that fills the space below...

I obtained a Subaru (actually made by Panasonic) stereo/cd/cassette deck from a 98 Outback Limited from a local wrecking yard for 100 bucks---installed it in my '99 Legacy GT which came originally with that same "single DIN" stereo that you're talking about. As I understand it "single DIN" and "double DIN" are standardized sizes for car stereos. The "double DIN" stereo from the Outback limited takes up the space previously occupied by the little storage compartment/slot on the bottom of the original stereo. Fits perfectly, bolted right in to original "little holes with the plastic inserts" in the dash. Plugged right into existing harness. Looks great, sounds great. The "double DIN" stereo, however, was only available on the Outback LIMITED.

I've found a great way to fill the space in my 92 legacy (not sure if it's the same size in the 96 or not). Going to purchase a new center channel speaker from Clarion...the SRK5 - it's a half din unit that fits perfectly into a din sized application. Will fill the gap below my stereo and give me MUCH BETTER TIME ALIGNMENT, allowing for an IMMENSELY BETTER LISTENING EXPERIENCE. Plus, it'll get rid of that ugly gap. (guessing the size is approximately the same on these two cars) Give me some measurements, and i'll see what it'll do for your car.
