i'm not sure if this is normal with subarus or what, but i've noticed that my steering wheel doesn't turn on its center point. when i turn the wheel all the way around, i can watch it move up and down in relation to the top of the dash. is this normal? after i noticed that i was curious if most steering wheels weren't centered when they were mounted, but my girlfriend's jetta is mounted dead center (even the VW logo in the middle of the wheel moves perfectly). i don't remember my old camry doing this either.

is this something i should worry about or is it fairly common?

I wouldn't worry about it. Not all manufacturers are going to mount the plastic trim so it's completely centered.

Is the outer wheel itself going up and down when you turn it? If so, by how much?

the outer wheel does go up and down when i turn it, maybe by about .5-.75 inches (could be less, i'm only estimating from what i am picturing in my head, but it's no more than .75 inches).

er um .....

that is a lot of play. If i am understanding you, you are saying that you can move the steering wheel uop and down left and right (without turning the steering wheel) 1/2 of an inch in the "x" and "y" dirction? I know its math ... but im trying to get a feeling for what your saying. Is it the steering wheel itself, or the entire steering column?

If it is just free play in the whhel, i would say the steering shaft bushing is shot. I have only seen this on old VW's where it was a gross amount of play.

Anything that involves the steering and braking of the car needs to be checked out.

no no no no... thank god it's not that, if that were the case, i would've brought that up when i bought the car...

when i spin the wheel i watch it move up and down against the top of my dash. the reason for this is that it's not attached to the steering column (maybe not?) in the center of the wheel. i wasn't sure if this is just shoddy work (maybe proof that there was some sort of work done on the car), if there is something wrong with the steering column, or if this is normal.

OH OK ...

Your talking about as you turn the wheel 360 degrees to go from lock to lock.

Not all sterring wheels are round, some are slightly oval for one reason or another, i think that is what your seeing. Usually not enough to notice. Never noticed it on the sooby, now im going to have to go look :)

Many steering wheels have a flat area on the 'bottom' (wheel centered). This is because there are no many lardbutts in the world that they now design cars to allow room for the extra edipose tissue!

Would like to 'supersize' that drive-thru order sir?
