Guest subarugsr
im sorry im asking this stupid question, i am a tad under educated.. but what is SPFI an abbreviation for? S...P...Fuel Injection?
Guest slagathor1
SPFI is Single Point Fuel Injection..Basically injected at the carb..MPFI is Multi Point Fuel Injection, fuel is injected at multiple points directly into the intake manifold.. Guest Adam N.D.J.
It's Throttle Body Injection with a fancy name is all. There is one large injector in the throttle body, rather than injectors for each cylinder. It's pretty good though. I've got an 89 3-door with it, and I get about 450 miles to a tank, as opposed to my multipoint turbo that gets about 250 to a tank. It's good on fuel mileage, but not too great for power. Guest Adam N.D.J.
It is electronic fuel injection, just more simple than the multiport (to an extent). You could replace a carb with it, but you would have to change the distributor, the intake, wire up the sensors and computer. A small feat for some people, a lifetime challenge for others. I was working on putting together a write up on how to convert from carb to SPFI for the EA81 people, but that has been pushed into the closet with a lot of other projects lately. I might look into starting that back up again. Catch ya Laters.
Guest GlCraigGT
hey adam, i'm planning to convert my 84 wagon to SPFI or MPFI (using turbo heads) and running it with MegaSquirt for the ECU. The plus side is I can still use my stock ignition system and MegaSquirt uses MAP instead of MAF so there is no need for the tiny SPFI MAF. They down side is i would need buy and build the ECU kit then go through the tuning process.
Guest Adam N.D.J.
Yeah, there are alway upsides and down sides to everything. I've check out the megasquirt link, looks like a pretty good system once everything is dialed in right. I was thinking of putting one together, as I like to tinker with electronics when I'm pretty bored. It's that liking for the electronic puzzles that spawned my putting the ER27 in the Brat.
