I am attempting to replace the front right axel on my 93 Impreza. The manual recommends using a puller and an installer for the removing and pressing on the hub. I was looking for the tools on line. What is the tread at the end? I found a kit for $95 that has an installer for a 20mmX1.5 thread and a 22mmX1.5 thread. There was another site that has a kit #AST7837 for $45 and has two installers but does not tell what size they are. Any help would be apreciated

I'm going to leave this to someone who's done the Impreza, but the Legacy doesn't require a puller at all; the splines just slide in....much easier than the Loyale series of cars. Wait for a definitive reply before spending money on a puller.

Early model Legacy (89-94) and 1st gen Impreza are all the same when it comes to front axles. My 96 Impreza is just like my 91 Legacy. I've done dozens (Between all the Subarus we've had) and never used any kind of puller. Remove one bolt from the sway bar link, remove the ball joint (preferably the joint going into the upright as opposed to the joint going in to the A arm), remove the nut on the end of the shaft (should do this first while the car is on the ground so you can use a pipe and breaker bar for leverage), push down on the A arm and pull the upright/strut towards you. The axle is splined and should come out of the upright. It may take a little coaxing. Remove the pin holding the shaft on the axle stub coming out of the trans and you should be able to remove the half shaft (when did we start calling them axles instead of half shafts anyway).

The only reason you might have to use a puller would be if the car has seen a lot of snow , i.e. the axle is slightly rusted into the hub. Even then, you could probably just bang the axle a couple times with a hammer (put a piece of wood or something in between the axle stub and hammer, otherwise you will damage the axle stub and the place selling you the new axle might refuse it and not give you a core refund).
