Hi, new to forum & need help with my Subaru

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I just joined today. Looks like a great site with lots of great info. I own a 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS Automatic. I'm having starting problems. I read thru the posts and seen all the starting problems that are related to cold start. Mine is the opposite. I'm having problems starting my Subaru when it's hot and humid outside. I turn the key and nothing. All the lights on the inside work. I have a new battery. I went and got a new starter and changed it. That did not help. So, put the old one back on. Then I got in the car and shaked the gear shift and it started right up. It's been almost 100 degrees here for the last three weeks and I've been fighting this problem. Sometimes I have to mess with the gear shift several times to get it to start. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this. I would appreciate all advice.. I really need to get this problem sorted out before I get stranded somwhere.. Thanks in advance...

Welcome to the list.

So the car starts fine when you shake the gear shifter?

If so this sounds like a neutral switch issue.

I would unplug all the connections and treat them with dielectric grease, this should fix your issues.

Unless it is simply a bad switch. That should be a failry cheap and easy fix as well. . .

Subaru says it's probably the inhibitor switch, but as usual it will be a week before they can even look at it. I'd like to try to get it fixed before the weekend. It's suppose to be back in the 90's and humid, and I need to go for a long drive Saturday.. Does this sound like a inhibitor switch problem or a neautral switch problem? If you still think the dielectric grease would work. What connections need greased? Where are they located? Sorry, I have no manual for this car. Local auto parts store don't sell them for my car. Don't wanna pay all that money to Subaru for a small section. Thanks again for any advice!
