I posted this on another board and found this one, so I'll give it a shot over here too.

Great to see XT'ers still out here. I have an 88 XT6 that we just love. Unfortunately, a year ago the engine blew with 250,000 miles on it. I think I got my money's worth out of it. It sounds like the crank broke in two pieces, or it lost a connecting rod. I haven't pulled it out yet, it just sits. My wife was the last to drive it, and thanks to her she wrecked my trusty old pickup truck with a new engine and tranny. In my twisted mind I'm thinking of cramming the 351 into the the XT, making it an XT351. I wouldn't be able to use the AWD, it would be a RWD, but damn would it be fun. The steering would still be powered by the electric pump and other parts would have to be thought through. The 351 is currently fuel injected, but an new intake, carb and scoop would be protruding through the hood. The rearend would be beefed up to handle the power, but retain the stock wheels. Anyone see anything like this before? Any thoughts? I can take a bashing.

you'd have to do some major suspension work up front in order for the car to handle the weight of that block. Or possibly an aftermarket impreza strut could handle that kind of weight, me don't know.

Curiuois as to how you could "beef up" the rear-end, but still keep the sube hubs and wheels, or why you would want little 13" rims and limited choice of puny tires to handle the power a 351 would crank out of the rear.

If you use the 351, you're also using the tranny to match it, no? So then you're custom fabbing a driveshaft to what rear end? a sube? prolly not. The rear diff wont be able to handle that direct power, nor will the hubs methinks. and axels???!!?? maybe you shoulkd think about a solid rear from a suzuki; it could be fabbed in there maybe, but man...either way, alot of headache and $$$..

Get wheel to wheel measurements in the rear, and see if any solid rears come close to that...

When there's a will, there's a way...but one must also consider that there is a fine line between possibility and plausibility...

Good luck..:headbang:

I have had this idea bouncing around for a long time, If I ever get any money to my name, I may try it....

Want to stick a shaft driven 1600cc Harley V-twin in a gen-1 soobie, powering the rear wheels. Less weight than the Sub mill, more horses, more torque, and that awesome Harley sound. Should be relatively do-able. what do you think?

As for the 351 in an XT, sounds like a hell of a lot of fab work, but I like it.

A guy lives near me who put a Harley engine in a snowmobile. He calls it a snow shovel. Get it? Harley Shovel head. Anyway he used a Subaru starter and and flex plate off an auto suby mated the Harley to start it. So it wouldn't be that hard to mate the harley engine to the tranny.
