Need Help, Blew my subby engine, want to do eng swap!

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am a newb here, I looked at the first 12 pages to try to answer my questions but didn't find it.

I have a 97 Brighton WGN, with a 2.2 non turbo, 4EAT trans.

I over heated it and the head gaskets blew.

I love the car, I want to keep it, It is optioned to look like a OBW and I have silver 16" in 2.5 RS wheels on it.

I need to know what motors will bolt right in, I am looking at a 90 L wagon with a 2.2, for 250 bucks, can I use this motor???

What years for the 2.2 are bolt ins, what about 2.0 or 2.5 engines???

Thanks for the help!!!

Pretty much anything will "bolt on"

There may be some issues with electrical you'll have to deal with. Also, you probably have single port exhaust ports. So if you get a first gen legacy 2.2 motor or 2.5, you'll need dual port exhaust headers.

Thanks!!! I am going to try to buy that 90 with the 2.2 for 250 then.

Any chance my intake and harness will bolt right up that 2.2?

Ok, worst case then, motor fits and I use the Intake and Fuel injection setup it came with, what else then?

Would I need the CPU from the donor?

Are there wiring diagrams to help me mod my harness to the older intake, ect...?

Thanks for all your help so far Legacy777!

I have never done an engine swap before, I have rebuilt the top end of a renault 4 cyl and it ran when I was done. I hand filed the head flat.

From what I have been reading here and there, I have the first year for the interference 2.2 , would it be a better bet to find a 97 donor?

I would say it would be better to use the engines ECU and harness, ive done a swap with EJ engines they arent that hard got my EJ18 out of my red wagon and into Lilly my white Sedan rather quickly I think

I am starting to think I can do this, I just gots to make sure the 90 runs good and buy it now.

So use the whole donor engine, harness and all, but what about the computer in my car, do I need the box from the donor if im using its harness?

Thanks again!

Why not just get your engine rebuilt and save a lot of trouble trying to match up something else. Rebuilding yours would save the cost of another engine and the money could be used for new parts on yours. You may want to get new heads. To me, this will get you a better engine for less money.

I would not use the engine from the 90. There are little thing that make it worth it to either fix yours or find a 2nd gen 2.2 ( I think your is a second gen) For exaple the crank sensor for my 90, was about $377, a crank sensor for yours is like $80. I am not sure what Josh and Cougar mean by "rebuilding" But I would reaplce the Head Gasket and all the other seals along with timing belts and the whole 9 yards. I dont think you can machine the heads. I would try it myself but I know my mechanic would charge $900 to fix yours. Just to give you a ball park. I think it will take you about 15 hours to do that Job.

I was thinking about the 90 swap cause of the dollars, it is a running car for 250 bucks, hit in the right rear with no title.

I have been told a few times my engine is not worth rebuilding, it over heated bad, it shut it self off, it does still run but, it cooked the oil, and it always had a "cold start" tapping noise that went away when warmed up with clean oil.

I don't know what to do now.

There are no cheap 97 up subs around me.

I was told, by a scrap yard guy, that I need to find a 97 98 or 99 subaru to donate an engine for my car.

I am lost with out my wheels!

Maybe throw down on one of those Japanese Take-out engines. I think there about $800. They have like 30,000 miles on them or something like that. I guess they have really strict emissions standards over there and so they have to pull them whether their bad or not. Might be worth a shot.;

I read somewhere that you would need a right hand drive car to make those JDM swaps easy, is this true?

Also I have VERY limited funds ATM, and 250 bucks is right up my alley!
