This is my first post so I wanted to say hello to all.

Ok ive been experiencing a very high idle, about 1500 after warm-up. After searching previous posts I believe that it may be either the IAC valve or maybe the coolant temp sensor. I'd like to check these out but I am not sure if I can locate them on the engine. I think I have found the IAC but not sure. Now Im sure alot of you know the diffuculty in locating a repair manual for a 97 Impreza. I know that there are downloadable manuals but with a dial-up connection that is nearly impossible.

Can somone point me in the direction of these parts or other ideas and give me some advise as to where I may find a manual.

Sitting in drivers side it should be on right side of engine a little more than half way back from front of engine, temp sensor is right close to it, if I remember correct. You should be able to look at Legacy manuel and find location. It has an air hose and coolant line that goes to it.

Mulcheese, you are on the right track. Have you tried pulling codes? IACV cleaning and Coolant Temp Sensor replacement made a big difference for me (on a '95 Legacy L). Both are located in the same area, under the Throttle Body and workable from over the passenger side front fender--I'm guessing it's pretty much the same on your '97 Impreza. The Haynes "1990-98 Legacy" manual might help.

Also try an advanced search here--"IACV" in New Generation. It's been discussed quite a bit. If that doesn't help, come back and ask more questions!

Good luck.

So here is where Im at. Ive located the IAC and I pulled the magneto, if that is what it is called, off and found that the armature moves quite freely. So I figured that the valve is not in need of cleaning. I then put it back and adjusted it until the idle was at about 800. I did read that this is not supposed to be adjusted. Is that corrrect? Next, the idle is where it should be but it does not bounce back like it should everytime which leads me to believe that there is something wrong with the valve or more likely the magneto. Am I able to buy just the magneto or are they sold as one?

How would I be able to pull codes? And without a manual where can I get the codes?

P.S. how am I able to put a permanent line at the bottom indicating my car as so many have done.

Strongly suggest you look for any stored codes before you do anything else, otherwise you're just throwing parts (and money) at the problem with no assurance it'll do any good.

To pull codes you need an OBDII scanner or access to one. Dealers and shops will charge you for the service (sometimes an arm and a leg.) Some chain parts stores, like Autozone, will pull codes for free--you might call around to see.

As for deciphering the codes, they are listed in the Haynes manual. May even be listed here on the board, I'm not sure. Worst case, post it here and someone will be sure to look it up for you.

Back to your IACV: If it seemed to turn freely maybe it's okay. They're expensive, so it might be wasted money to pursue that route. By the way, I wouldn't worry too much about the adjustment--unless it really runs badly afterward. I read the same warnings--but why did they design it with slotted adjustment holes then?

Coolant temperature sensor is a possible solution. New one helped my '95 Legacy tremendously, but I had a specific code that pointed to the problem.

It's a $20 or so part, so at least it's not an outlandish price if you do want to try it.

At any rate, good luck. And if you have anymore questions just ask.

Alright I got the idle back to almost normal. It idles at @ 750-700, smooth, with no more jumps. I was still curious if there were any codes so I went to Autozone and this is what it said, P0505, idle control system malfunction. It runs fine now so I had him clear the codes and i will go back in a day and see if the code returns.

Any opinions on whether I am able to purchase just the magneto or they come as a set. My next step is to call the dealer for the answer but just looking for any other ideas.
