hmmm i got mine out of a 95 legacy I think that does have the speed sensor, What are your suggestions about that?

I think Noah may be correct. The guy I got my EJ22 from said that when they went to the newer computer setup around that year, the vehicle would go into a derated "limp-home" mode if any of the sensors were not hooked up. I'm not sure if it happened in 95 or 96, but I assume the change would coincide with going to OBDII.

According to my FSMs, the speed sensor voltage ranges are not compatible between the EA and EJ cars. The EJ22 computer needs a pulse that goes between 0 and 5 volts, and the EA82 computer needs an input that varies slightly above and below 2 volts. I was not able to find the spec for the EA81, but it should be the same as the EA82.

My EJ22 seems to have no trouble running without a VSS. (It's an 89 engine with the harness and ECM from a 92.)

What is the production date of your engine? I just called a friend of mine who knows the EJ computers like the back of his hand and he needs to know that before he can look into it. He did say you probably do need the VSS, but that it's likely you could take the VSS pickup out of the legacy tranny and put it in your d/r.

It is an EJ22 out of a 1997 Impreza L. I will only be getting the complete engine but only the engine harness, and thats it. This leaves me with obtaining and ECU and body harness. I hope that this engine will work. It ran like a beast in that lil Impreza and just know it will pep up the hatch great.

Since you have to find an ECM and harness anyway, you might check and see if you could run the 97 engine with the computer from an older car (90-94). The stuff on the engine itself could be exactly the same and plug right in. The guy that I mentioned earlier said that he ran an EJ25 (which I believe didn't come out until after the OBDII switch) with the computer and stuff from an earlier EJ22 in a vanagon conversion he did a while ago. I'll give him a ring tomorrow and see if he found out anything yet about your engine.

You should be able to use it regardless. It may just take a little research and fabrication.

The impreza that this engine came out of got a 2.5 to replace it. It is my buddies impreza and he is using the 2.2 ECU that was in the impreza to run the 2.5 and it works perfect. So I could get either a 2.5 or 2.2 for this one I bet. I am just wondering what the years were that were compatible with other years. That is as far as sensors. I was mostly wondering about the adapter plate kit that they make for the EJ22s to bolt to dual range trannies. And that this one will be compatibale with the adapter plate kit.
